cb550 HELP! can't find .75 ringsets
« on: April 07, 2009, 08:38:23 AM »
After 200 miles my rebuilt 1976 550F motor was still smoking bad under load.

after pulling it apart, it seems the cylinder bore was off and two pistons had seized, etc...

I am having it redone by a new machinist, but my rings are too worn to reuse.

now I can't find ringsets anywhere for the pistons I bought at cmsnl.com.

I could buy all new pistons and ringset packages, but I'm broke and would love to find just the ringsets.

part: 13041-374-000

any help that anyone can offer would be greatly apreciated!!!!

thanks,
Noah

Those are discontinued so you need to find someone who has old stock. Try:-

www.westernhillshonda.net

BUT BE CAREFULL as the site will give you a price but they might not have them so e-mail or call

I did already call them, and they were nice enough to put out a parts alert to dealers about it.

I also called davidsilverspares.com, and a few other places that I found in the FAQ section of this site about "where to get parts".

I've heard back from several people and it seems like they can't be had for love or money.

I feel especially stupid because when I ordered originally from cmsnl.com I wanted the .25 oversize, but clicked on the wrong thing and didn't catch it. The .25 rings are available. I guess no one ever used the .75.

thanks again.

Well 0.75 is 3rd oversize and as ive never yet rebored any Honda due to wear (only siezure) they probably never sold many.

I read about a firm total seal in the US or others if you are there. sorry cant help more than that

thanks!

i gave TAS a call, they are going to get back to me,

but even if they don't have the rings they seem like the kind of place i'll try again.

econohonda in NZ said they have 3 ringsets for $79 NZ ($45 US) each, and that I could have a machinist cut down the gaps on some 1.0 rings to complete the set.

that seems like a lot:
david silver spares has .25 rings for $15 each
cmsnl has 1.0 piston and ring packages for $60 each

it doesn't seem like enough of a savings to justify the worry of whether the rings were cut down right

Could anyone give me an opinion on reusing my original pistons with new rings?

I have a spare set of stock size cylinders that could use, instead of the 0.75.

My suspicion is that these are too worn, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask, it would be an easy solution.

cheers.

I read about a firm total seal in the US or others if you are there. sorry cant help more than that

called total seal, they don't know parts numbers, just finish bore size, ringgroup width and depth.

my machinist measured the rings and told me:
finished bore: 2.334 mm
compression ring width: 1.5 mm
oil ring width: 2.5 mm

total seal didn't have them, anyone know any place else to try?
