New guy with cb 500 troubles!
« on: April 05, 2009, 05:39:10 AM »
Hi everybody!!! MY name is Bob! I live in northern NJ. Just bought a '72 cb500. Shes got less than 7k on the odometer and in really good condition..... But she is seized up! Im in the process of tearing the motor down and Ive run into a bit of trouble. I cant get to one of the cam sprocket bolts that holds the upper camshaft sprocket to the camshaft!! With the motor being seized i am unable to position the the bolt where i can reach it. Im thinking the only option i have is to somehow break the cam chain and reassemble it later. I know what you're thinking...... and let me assure you i have tried to break the motor free!!  Ive put it in gear and rocked it back and forth. Ive hired circus elephants to stomp on the kickstart(they work for peanuts). Ive sprayed gallons of wd-40, silikroil, crc-556, pam, butter, olive oil, hairconditioner, maple syru-oops, got carried away! You get my point. So my question is this.... If i am going to have to break the camchain, What size is the chain and can anyone recommend a good chainbreaking tool? Do i need a chain reassembly tool as well? Any other suggestions? Hope to see you on the road!!! thanks

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the forum, there probably is plenty of info on cam chains somewhere in this site, tons of great knowledge here.
I wouldn't worry about the chain, you should replace it anyways after a rebuild, it's good insurance, so if you can cut it with a dremmel or grind the heads off the pivots on one link it should come apart Just be carefull about the metal dust not getting into the motor. Good luck.
