Kiwi owners, what octane rating are you using?
« on: April 08, 2009, 01:05:00 AM »
OK I've read the FAQ's on what gas to use in these old bikes but most of it pertains to US petroleums.
We here in NZ have two choices  91 Regular and 95 Super. (Four if you count BP Unlimate 98 and Gull Biofuel)
All petrol companies use different additives so I'm picking our NZ petrol is also a different Frankenstien breed.
I'm running 95 simply because the boat had 50 litres of the stuff still in it and I'm slowly using it as the weather is no good for fishing. ;D
I'm just wondering what my fellow Kiwi SOHC4 owners use?
According to the FAQ's section the lower octane would be preferable as the higher octane requires more compression to ignite and burns hotter thereby causing carbon build-up.
I'm going to experiment a wee bit with my next tank of gas and fill her to the gills with 91.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

As I understand it its not you need higher compression to burn it, its IF you have high compression you need it
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Yep, and if you don't have a high compression engine you will get no benefit from using higher octane gas.

I'm using 91, might up the octane when the new top end is ready to go on.

BP Ultimate 98 is my favourite. Not so much for the octane. Provided the combustion chambers do not contain to much carbon, 95 should be sufficient. Modern gasolines like BP's Ultimate and Shell's V-Power and now Shell's new FuelSave Euro 95, just this week released in the Netherlands (worldpremière) clean up old deposits and help to keep the fuel tract, valves and rings clean.

Yeah it's V Power 95 I'm using as the boat motor is only a Evinrude 90hp and it is pushing a 17 foot Haines so our boat mechanic suggested keeping the octane up.
I'm not actually having any problems with the bike on V Power 95, was just wondering if I should be using the lesser 91 for good Honda reasons.
