Haven't done it myself, but this website seems like it would be helpful:

Any particular issue with vista? It has been flawless for me even on an older laptop.

you should just be able to boot from an xp disk and delete the partition. thats how I do it.
If that still is an issue, go to ubuntu.org and download ubuntu, burn it as an iso.
boot from that disk and open gparted and delete the partitions and recreate them as ntfs.
You might also just be able to find gparted on its own. I did in the past. You can make that a bootable iso as well.

Did vista come on the pc? It may be possible the bios prevent overwriting the hard drive. You should be able to check to see if that is on in your bios. If it is, turn it off and try it.
gparted works very well though.

So the issue is more the alarm system and software than actually vista. Some software is fine, others are not. I have games from 98 that work on vista but other stuff does not.

Did you try compatibility mode?

when i try to boot from cd... it is not the usual xp setup screen
just a blue screen and it looks like it going thru the motions... then says unable due to newer windows installed... won't allow anything.

i'll go check on ubuntu

When you first start your pc, there should be a set up key, it is usually f2. so push the power button and just start tapping. Your pc might beep at you but nothing bad will happen. This should take you into the bios.
From there, you usually navigate with the arrow keys but there should be quick info on the side or bottom letting you know what does what.

Compatibility mode is accessed by RIGHT clicking on the program icon and left clicking properties. there should a tab that says compatibility. Go to that tab and then you can select the OS style you want and there are a couple of other options but usually os choice is enough.

Microsoft says they'll stop supporting XP as of April 14th for major updates. This will force me to buy a new computer (which I don't need) and get the newer, more buggier version of whatever Microsoft decides I have to buy.

Thanks again Microsoft!  :P

The gate software and alarm software should have a program icon. You right click that, make sure you are not right clicking the shortcut. You need to be in the start menu or the program files folder.

Also, ms should still be doing updates for a few more years. they are stopping their regular tech support but extended service is available but of course has a cost.

no... the install won't even work because it is not compatible... therefore, no icon, no program, no nuthin.

evidently the only way to format c drive is w/ the vista cd... which we don't have... comp didn't come w/ one.

A dual boot will only work if xp is on first and then vista loaded on. If you put on vista, then xp, it breaks the boot loader as vista uses a newer style. It is actually much better than the old ntldr that 2000 and xp used.

OK on the install, do not do the autorun. Close that then go into "computer" double click the cd-rom. find the setup icon and right click that and you can do the compatibility mode on that too. I have installed many old programs like this.

You cant expect software writers to constantly port for old software. Windows does it better than anyone else. Apple is more than happy to give a person the finger on old software and hardware. Apple many times will not support past 3 years for their own stuff. Ilife and Iwork are notable programs on this, same with itunes.

vista won't allow an overwrite of its own operating system... must be done from reboot, which won't allow a right click type of thing... i'm trying a free hard drive eraser that is working on partitions but still not working on the c drive, which is the boot/system drive.

c drive is locked down more securely than a prudish prom date!

i do have a problem w/ vista though... requires way too much resource power... 1 gig of ram runs XP eeeeaaaasily, not so w/ vista.  It seems like vista got spammed too!  way too many un-needed programs and gadgets and doohickeys and not enuf bare bones ease of use.

A lot of vista stuff can be shut off. If you push the windows key and the R key, the run box comes up. Type in msconfig.
From there, you can shut down a lot of crap in the startup field. You can also disable windows defender too. I run vista on a gig and maybe have to restart every few weeks and only if the wireless goes goofy, everything else still works fine.
I use sleep a lot and barely ever have a lockup.

Vista has been so stable that some one would have to almost break my arm before I go back to xp.
Obviously it requires some learning as it is a different OS but that is true of any os.

ya... it does work... i won't argue that.
there is some cool stuff too.
i took a bunch off though and it ran better.
compatibility issues are the problem that requires me to change though.
otherwise i'd just leave it and save myself the trouble.
