Final Drive Gear Ratio....
« on: April 09, 2009, 09:26:45 AM »
I just ordered new sprockets and a chain, and am wondering if this was a bad idea: I ordered a 17t front sprocket (stock size for my '71 cb500), and a 36t rear sprocket (where 34t is stock).  That changed the ratio from 2.00 to 2.12; that's really not enough to see any gains or losses regarding acceleration or top speed is it?  I got the 36t b/c it was a closeout item and couldn'r pass up the price :)

More teeth in back = better acceleration, more rpms for any given speed.

I dont know your bike that well but I think in general, as the rear sprocket size grows, you will make clearance issues with the chainguard, and you will need a longer chain.

17/34 vs 17/36. Thats about as small a change as can be made.

If I've figured right, the 36t has about 3/16" larger radius than the 34t, so if your swingarm slot will allow the rear wheel to be pushed forward that much more to fit the new chain you will be OK, chain length wise.
Same 3/16" reduced chainguard clearance.
