Turn Signals
« on: October 23, 2005, 05:47:11 AM »
Things are coming along with my 75 CB 550 restoration. It has never been my intent to restore to original condition.
I was working on cleaning up the wiring on the original turn signals and testing for functionality. Man these things are huge.
I decided these things have got to go. Still I like the function and safety of turn signals. So I've been thinking about smaller,
more modern alternatives.

Has anyone gone down this path? What did you use? How did you mount them? Pics??

I've got yellow LED cateyes mounted on the top end of my fairing (hard to see in thepic), and I've added LED short stem signal indicators front and rear, replacing the big yellow and chrome globes of yore...

I hear these lamps take less electricity and stay cooler for what's thats worth.

You know opinions are like #$%*s. I personally love my big CB750 turn signals way more than in my modern bike. They are easy to see and that's what I want when riding.

If I were going to change the turn signals, I would surely fit those bar-ends turn signals, very cafe. On the back, probably something on the license plate bracket. I guess there are some aftermarket catalogs to look from. As I'm more of the stocker type I always look first for the original part, though I can make exceptions at things like bolts, nuts, cables and that type of things if original get expensive.

I'm pretty certain the turn signals from the 70's could be seen quit well. Matter of fact. If the wind was at your back, I think you could probably cut the engine
and continue moving with all the wind the signals would  catch, just like sails. :)

So heres some pics of the lights, and the bike itself so you can see how streamlined it gets with smaller lights.

The way it was explained to me;  the primary run and signal lighting for licensed vehicles had to be DOT approved.  Additional lighting has restrictions on colors and intensity.

Of course, enforcement of the the law is up to officer discression.  But, if they are looking for an excuse to pull you over...

look at a variety of motorcycles in your area and see what is the smallest used. You can then legally use that size. Also check with your state, you may not even NEED turn signals. Some states do not require the use of turn signals all you need is a tail and head light. So check on that if you are really interested in cutting drag and streamlining your look.

Ah. I see. Looks good. I'm in Texas and I thought it was not necessary to even have turn signals. I was wrong.
They say if the bike came with turn signals, it must have them for the inspection. Still I see so many bikes without
any turn signals. I supose a guy could put them on the the inspection, then remove them.

That is usually how it goes with any road vehicle.. if it came with it from the factory.. you have to keep it..

Police in some states can actually ticket you for running non OE style mufflers on some vehicles. Or ticket you for removing factory equipment..  By (their) laws you can only run stock or stock replacement parts on road vehicles.. no high performance mufflers or mufflers that are louder than stock... Thank GOD Louisiana isn't one of them.. I have straight through tube mufflers on my mustang.. and wouldn't have it any other way!!!!! (the mufflers are dumped but I have never been hassled with it.. I have tailpipes for inspection) The people that ride with me just have to get used to the rumble... hehehehe..

Rles and regs are widely different around the world, in the UK you won't get through the MOT without turn signals on a CB 750. You won't pass if you have noisy pipes; even if a foot peg rubber is damaged or missing you will fail and we have a minimum size for the number plate too!! Talk about picky!  >:(

Things like that only apply to newer vehicles. After all, it is almost impossible after 30 years to still have the factory exhaust or to have not changed parts. Besides, how many of them know what a cb came with? Especially since there were 2 different light designs for the sohc.

I finally got a Dig camera that actually is worth a damn  ;D, so here are some pics of the latelst lighting project on my CB.

All lights act as running and brake lights , along with the small bullet lights as respective turn signals as well. Bullets are dual fillament 1157 bulbs , and the Cateye is a L.E.D unit.

I only see one bad thing with where you have your brake light. No one can see it on the right side. I wont say it is bad or to change it back, just dont get turned into roadkill!

Thanks 4 the concern , it is appreciated.

I thought of this when specking out the system. All of the lights act as brake lights, so for me not to get killed by some soccer mom on her cell-phone. I wired them to all act as brake , as well as running lights.

The Cateye , as well as both bullet lights act as brake lights as well as running/marker lights....
Each bullet is a turn signal as well , right for right , and so on.

Figuring out how to wire them up took some time  ;D
