1976 550 Carbies
« on: April 15, 2009, 07:18:04 PM »
I am considering buying a '76 550 but it has no carbies.
As a new boy to this thread (more a Triumph man, '65 Cafe & '86 flat track) my question is, what would be a replacement set?

I understand they were 4 x 22mm, so, can I fit say 4 Mikunis or do I have to get NOS?

Hope I get it, they are a great looking bike with plenty of scope for customising (see Triumph bit above).
Cheers

Welcome

Used sets are usually pretty easy to come across on ebay or on this forum.  Shouldn't be too hard or too costly...

Depends on how hard you want to make things on yourself.

Can you find Mikuni's with the correct carb spacing, and proper couplers to connect them to the manifold?
Then there is the filtration side to consider, and the throttle cable interface.
Finally, there is the jetting to dial in for the various throttle settings.

On the other hand, the stock carbs are pretty close to a straightforward installation.  If the filtration and exhaust is stock, you can just use Honda specs to have a nice running bike.

If your bike is an F model, then find 069A carbs, if a K model find either 022A or 087A set up carbs. (Assuming you are going to use stock filter and pipes, which you don't specify.)
If you are going to change the air filter and exhaust away from stock, then internal setup will have to change whatever carb you select.

The stock bikes are quite a joy to go out and ride.  But, if a garage hobby is more your style, change whatever you like.

Pardon my ignorance, but if I have a set of carbs sitting in front of me, how do I determine the setup being 069A vs 022A?  Is it marked as such?

Thanks,

Ken

Yes, on each individual carb body mount flange, top right.
