The difference here is that you cannot realistically ride for 700+ mile days for 20hrs at a time day after day. This may be fine for one day but there is no way you can sustain those kind of long hours for a trip like this unless that is the goal - endurance riding (like Iron Butt).

Most long distance riders will ride anywhere from 300-700 mile days stopping to see things along the way. A 10-12 hr day is sustainable day after day. It also depends on speed of travel - the faster you go the more its going to fatigue you as the concentration factor is that much higher. Ive done 750 miles in 28 hrs as well - its no big deal. I did the first 550+ miles at 80mph all the way (9hrs) -this was last year going to Mid-Ohio. The rest was in the morning ;-)

cheers
Andy

Go for broke!  I'd take a little extra time to enjoy the trip -- and SEE America.

Get the motorcycle coverage on the AAA membership  -- it's a little extra but worth it!

Get a cheap video camera and take some footage along the way at your stops.

This may be one of the most memorable experiences in your youth.  I'd do it if I was in your shoes.

I know I can change a tube roadside, and I'm getting the Stopngo repair kit with the hose that screws into your spark plug port, and turns a cylinder into a compressor. I have a full rainsuit for the drizzly days.
I don't think 500 miles a day is unreasonable. We'll figure out a good cadence of riding and rest, and definitely start out very early in the morning. I'm putting together a map of our proposed stops for the night. I'll put a link up on this thread. Basically, we have to be back by May 26th. We're planning on leaving on the 18th from Sacramento. So really like 8 days to do it. Thanks for all the support from everyone. I'll give everyone the full skinny when it's crunch time, route, contents of the repair kit, etc. Some pics before we set out.
