This is start of my bobber project. ( 38 Chief )  Its been sitting around for too long and after a go at three Hondas, I think that i need a new challenge. 
I found the bike in south west Saskatchewan while working and made a deal to trade an old canvas camper trailer for the bike.  The motor was not in the bike but the owners son was able to direct me to the gully that they had thrown it in.  There was what looked like a grain auger motor mounted in the bike when found and one half of the tank was missing. 
i was able to find the mising half tank and the transmission case and hauled the motor out of the bush. 
i started collecting parts for the bike and came to the conclusion that Indian parts are very expensive so I have bought pieces from time to time and that has turned this project into a long term affair.  That and I have moved three times since I bought the bike.  There is several boxes or parts and pieces which contain the large parts of the bike.
To date i have:
Straightened the frame and replaced all the front end bushings and rollers
rebuilt the brakes front and back
respoked the wheels with stainless and new rims( took about 15 years until someone started repoping the rims)
new tires
some preliminary work on the body parts
seat recovered
frame painted

When i stand back and look at the pile of parts and review what still has  to be fixed, i get a little chilled. 
Anybody that has Chief parts for sale, let me know.

You definitely have your work cut out for you!!! That is going to be a hard build but will be amazing once completed! I think Gerhed has a chief IIRC. Prolly no spare parts but likely some input etc.

All i can say is good luck and I'm glad to see you're sticking with the project. At the very least you have a nice looking roller there.

I like that front springer design.
The girder on my chief seems pretty tame by comparison.
Yes, I have no spare parts.
When I take mine out I really baby it----low revs etc.
Don't want to break anything.
Got any pics of the bike with the auger motor in it ?

Right after I got my chief, I used to consult with a fellow who owned
Standley Paints in Ventura, Cal.
He raced a '35 Indian Scout at Ascot Speedway in Gardena, Cal.
And this was in 1968 !
I needed a new distributor and he told me that the original Autolite dist.
was made for a Ford engined generator. I got a new one at an auto parts supplier
for $25.!

No pictures of the bike with the auger motor in it!  I took the auger motor out before i loaded it into the truck for fear that someone would think It was part of my work!
The distributor apparently was a common piece and used in various engines.  I would like to know what ford power plant it was used in.
I did find out the part numbers for the cap, rotor, condenser, and points and walked over to the autoparts store and the guy looks at the numbers and said" I don't have them in stock, but i can get them tomorrow". 
i bought a distributor that needs to be rebuilt for $100.00 and thought that was a good deal. Also a transmission case for $ 200.00 and I have the internals from the basket for the rebuild. 
nothing holding me back now except money!
