CB550 Clutch springs
« on: October 25, 2005, 07:08:32 AM »
I very quickly find that you just never know what a previous owners did on one of these older bikes.
Case in point.........  I picked up a set of new clutch plates for the 75 CB 550 for $5.00 off of E-bay.
I didn't really feel like I needed them because the clutch was working fine. Still for $5.00 I decided
to replace with new ones.

With the clutch disassembled I went to measure the clutch springs. Manual states 30.5 mm in uncompressed
state. These four springs were 35 mm..... Hmmmm

The clutch prior to disassembly works fine. What is the impact of longer springs? I assume this would just
make clutch movement a bit stiffer.

The manual normally states minimum acceptable length. You didn't tell us what the specified length is.
It is certainly possible that these are some type of aftermarket spring also. Aftermarket springs are typically a little stiffer.
Finally if it ain't broke ...... (and since you already have it apart- if all the parts look OK) don't f..k with it!!
