went for ride and got smoke!
« on: April 11, 2009, 04:28:02 PM »
so i went for a 40 km ride with bro in-law with his gxr and he told me that when i gun it i blow blue smoke and the more i rode it got less but still some.My question is i don't want to lose riding time and i know i have a oil leak coming from head gasket will i do any damage to the bike if i ride like this  and just top up the oil until winter when i can tear it apart and do a thorough job? any guess as to what is causing the smoke rings, valves? the bike is a 78 CB550 k with 42000 km or about 24000 miles so it might be do for an overhaul i suspect. i don't know if i should invest in a complete tune up yet or wait until the oil issue is dealt with what you guys think?

It may get worse, but it won't metasticize. Whatever is bad, usually valve stem seals, and/or rings, just get worse without hurting anything else.  Put some Marvel Mystery oil or SeaFoam in it according to the label and ride it. They go in both the gas and oil.  Pepto-Bismal for an old engine.

Your engine isn't really old, but I'd bet it has had periods of sitting where the stem seals got dry and hard. I vote for them more than rings.

But that's just me, see what others have to say.

A compression test could eliminate rings/valves as a problem. But either way, I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't know much about the 550 but the valve stem seals on my 350F was a weekend job.  Really, a one day job if I recall.

Probably valve guide seals.  Seems the 77 and 78 550K ran hotter than prior models.  Probably and added "benefit" from placating EPA observers.
