Just got the repair bill - ouch!
« on: April 11, 2009, 08:00:17 PM »
The day I picked up my $2500 1978 cb550k I dropped it off at my mechanic's place to have him look it over and adjust the timing and check the carbs.  The tires were cracked with age and he also spotted warn sprockets.  I already knew that one of the fork seals was leaking, and I did it myself on my last bike - but I thought it would save some time to just have him do it and drop in some progressive sprigs while he was at it. The master caliper needed a rebuild too.  I was so excited about the improvements to the bike that I didn't go into details like cost.
Found out today that it has come to about $600 in parts and $1000 in labour.  That is Canadian money but still  :o !  I will never be able to sell this bike now , because I will never get that money out of it.
Moral of the story... do the work yourself. Just got lazy this time around...

How often do you ever get all your money back on a toy? It sounds like you got a lot of work done, if he did it well it should serve you well.

Enjoy

Thanks guys.  The silver lining is that maybe now I will be forced to keep this bike instead of trading it off for something else.  And this guy really knows his stuff so I probably am not risking my life as much as I did when I fixed up my supersport.  I forgot to mention that he tracked down the cause of a mystery oil leak and fixed it with a new o-ring in the oil pump.

Spanner I am just trying to work out which option would be most cost-effective and in estimating the bar tab, I need a little clarification: are you from Nashville or are you from Dublin?  ;)

Cheers,

Chad

If your mechanic is running a shop, good on ya for supporting it.
If he's doing it at home-that's way too expensive for labour.

Getting "real" old school mechanics who know these bikes is getting harder and harder, support him or lose him! ;D
Oh yeah can you get Spanners plane to go via New Zealand, I don't know a thing about your bike but could do with a holiday, maybe I can undo the tops of the bottles for Spanner? ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I said I thought It sounded like he got alot accomplished, yes it is a good deal of money but if he did his job and back his work it was worth every penny.

I seldom pay for labor of any kind on my personal stuff, my dad owns a body shop and I am a certified welder and a mason. Skilled labor in these parts is going to set you back $42.50 - $60.00 per hour and that is with out overhead attached.

It looks like seaweb covered everything on his list. I also got a new chain along with the sprockets, and he checked my wheel and steering bearings and was going to replace them if necessary (I forgot to ask if they were replaced).  Oh, and he tracked down an electrical gremlin that was causing the tail light to not work. I don't know exactly what else there was for parts but I will get the complete list when I pick the bike up.  This guy runs an actual shop doing restorations and his own machining.  He's just buttoning up a 1970's Ducati resto that I mistook for a brand-new Sport Classic, but he seems to have a real passion for these old Hondas and knew exactly what to look for and where to look.  With my last cb550 he even came up with a supersport side cover from his cache of parts.  I don't really know of a shop around here where I can sit down and chew the fat with a mechanic who's been doing this since these bikes were new... and he's close to my house so that's a bonus too.

Spanner, Hush, and Mick: I just finished the calculations (particularly the part about Ireland) and I'm going to have to pass on your generous offers.  In fact, it appears as though I got an absolute bargain by going this route; I can't wait to tell the missus how much money I saved. Cheers guys.

Hi Guys,

The "bar tab" would be a low cost alternative.

I don't know what the real costs are now, but 6 years ago a complete tune up, and tune up only, on a Hardley-Have&Son was $650.00........

At that time the shop rate for Hardley-Have&Son (remember, 6 years ago) from what I was told was $95.00 per hour.....

Sounds to me like the bowling team with the drinking problem you guys are getting together would be the way to go........ ;) ;)

EDIT - - What I meant to finish up with is:  The bar group would be a low cost alternative...... but I think you got your money's worth....... look at the cost for Hardly work......

I bought a 1980 CB750k off someone here for $300 and dropped it off at my mechanic before taking it home (never tried to start it). Told him: tune up, carb clean/synch, tires (good quality), check chain, battery and check brakes... $700 when I picked it up. I could have done most of the work myself (and should have), but when I picked it up it ran beautifully. He checked the whole electrical system (needed charging system). This guy restores these old pigs, and stands by his work. Keep your mechanic in business as the stealerships won't touch bikes older than 10 years.
