I think my bike is angry
« on: April 12, 2009, 10:47:22 AM »
So, I come out of my aptment today all ready to go to my parents house for easter sunday. All I have is my bike (76 CB550) since I left my car at my parents yesterday. I hop on fire her up get about 1/2 mile down the road and buh bu bu bu b b... Dead Bike. Turn the key off and on, no lights, nothing comes on, try to kick start, nothing. Check the battery, still connected and everything.
Call up pops and had him come pick me up, decide to try jumping it, just on an off chance. Nope. So I managed to wheel it back to my Apt where it is currently sitting.

Side Rant: This happened right in front of a Church where people were going in for easter mass, nobody even offered help. I must have asked 8 people to borrow some jumper cables and nobody had any and one guy said he couldn't beause he was in a hurry to get into church. Why again do these people go to church? It's obviously not doing any good.

Enough of that. Anyone have any idea what could have gone wrong? I am reletively new to this, but quickly gaining experience as my bike finds newer and better ways to stop working. What should I look into first? (besides a mechanic/ dumpster/ New god)

Voltage on the battery, hook up a voltmeter to see if there is any juice.
You'll probably want to charge it first though, sounds like it is dead.
Check to see if all your cables are connected (and plastic connectors).

#1 Check the fuses, sounds like a blown fuse.

#2 Check your ignition plug, it could have come loose.

#3 Quite a 'reaction' from the onlookers, perhaps you should repost this topic under the 'Open Forum' category.   I'd love to comment, but this isn't the right page for it ;)

Check for a loose ground.

Sometimes its hooked up at the battery but the other end (on the engine mount bolt for say a 400/750) gets loose or corroded.

Yeah, blown fuse was my first reaction but I don't really know enough to say. I thought I'd get the opinion of those smarter than me and see if there is anything else it could be.

Would a loose ground cause the bike to just shut down mid ride?

did you check your fuses? a very similar thing happened to me on my 750 last week, turned out to be a blown fuse, lucky for me (and this is totally unbelievable... good karma??) it happened to die in front of a non-discript warehouse type building where i parked it and walked a couple blocks back to a auto body shop to see if they could spare a fuse. i needed a 15 amp but they only had a 10 amp so i took it not knowing if it was going to work or not. when i got back to my bike there was a beautiful old (must have been early sixties) bmw sitting there with the garage door open, i looked inside and guess what i saw.... a shop full of about 9-10 old bikes of various makes and models including a very nice cafed 400-4, how random is that? an older guy named dave asked if he could help me, so i told him what happened and he started laughing and said that it couldnt have happened in a better place. we hung out for about a half hour talking about bikes and what-not. he ended up giving me two 15 amp fuses and i was on my way.....you meet the nicest people on a honda!!   anyway, check your fuses
Funny thing about regret is...... its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

Both a blown fuse and a loose ground will cause the bike to just absolutely stop.

No amount of jumper cable will make it get power.

It will if it loses its connection mid ride.

The most likely causes of the problem have been listed.  Check the main fuse, check the ignition switch connections, and check the battery connections.  Chances are you'll find the problem with one of those.

And if it isn't the fuse (still my top bet) check that you didn't slide the kill switch on by accident. ;D
Been there done that. :)
10amp 15 amp 20amp all work, my bike came with 50amp fuses, not sure why you'd use something ohms rated to number eight fencing wire on a bike but who knows?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Wow nokrome, sounds like you broke down in front of a whole different kind of church, I like their congregation better.

Thanks guys, hopefully it's that simple. Now I just have to put up with an afternoon of relatives telling me about their friend's third cousin's roommate who crashed his motorcycle and how I shouldn't be on one in the first place.
