Figured out my coil issue
« on: May 15, 2009, 04:23:01 PM »
So I bought some new coils for my 750 from parts N more.  Hooked them up but didn't mount them to the bracket yet, and the bike started up just fine.  I mounted the coils in the original bracket.  Go to start the bike and 2 - 3 are not firing.  Strangest thing.  I thought I had burned out one of the coils.  Put the old one in and it worked fine.  Thinking I had a faulty coil I ordered a new one.  Same thing.  Mount it and no spark.  So after scratching my head for days and trouble shooting every wire I could think of I figured out what the problem was.

The after market coil mounts pretty tight to the original bracket on the right side of the bike.  When it wasn't mounted it sparked fine.  As soon as I mounted it.  No spark.  Turns out that the rubber covered connection on the points side of the coil was arching to the mount. Even though it has plastic around the connection it still caused the short in the spark.  The reason the OEM coil worked while mounted is because the connections are in a different spot and don't come close to the bracket.

I ended up putting a thin piece of rubber between the connection and the mount and what do you know problem fixed.

Wondering if anyone else has run in to this problem.

Yeah with Accel coils....

I used the dremel to cut out a U shaped spot on the mount.

Gave it enough clearance...then I siliconed it connection.
