1978 CB400T Hawk purchase opinions?
« on: May 27, 2008, 02:36:57 PM »
Found a 1978 CB400T locally, the owner went through the bike to make it a daily rider.  Money has gotten tight and he wants to sell it.  It is original, but needs carbs boots and some sleeves or something that go inbetween the carbs and the engine.  Anyway he wants $250 for the bike and it has 26,000 on it.  Probably a good deal, but are parts available?  Let me know what you guys think.  I have been working on a cb750, so i can imagine the 400 is pretty easy to work on also.

Carbs are a swine to clean, have even known ultrasonic not to work so they may be difficult to get, new would be EXPENSIVE

Without looking at pics at $250 and a runner sounds like a good deal.  I have done a lot of work on the 400's and have restored an 80 & 81 with no problem getting parts.  Mine were the CM400's so I am not sure how different those are from the Hawk.  There is usually a lot of stuff on eBay too.  Western Hills Honda in OH also helped with some parts as I did restore those 2 bikes so wanted new OEM parts.  They are fun and easy engines to work on.  As far as the carbs on my 400's, easy to get at and I was able to drop all the jets and float while they were on the bike.  Let us know how it goes...

I just sold my two CB400T Hawks last fall. They are much easier to work on than a CB750, although the later carbs (*0 and 81) are something of a pain. The early carbs are pretty easy. Just be sure to get the carbs bench synched well, though, because I never did figure out a way to get to the adjuster screw. The price sounds right. I sold my 1978 CB400T II, which was in very good running condition, for a grand.
