1972 CB500 Starter Question
« on: April 13, 2009, 12:22:26 PM »
Hi All,

I just picked up a '72 CB500 on Friday. It's running great but the starter seems to need replaced. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it spins and sounds like it's draining the battery. I've got another starter coming in the mail but I was unsure of where the starter is located. Is it under the chrome cover right behind the cylinders? Yeah, I know this is a stupid question and I downloaded the service manual but they really don't show the exact location. I don't want to tear into stuff that doesn't need torn into.
I'm sure I'll figure this out once I start looking at it but what is the likely source of the problem? Is it worn teeth? Bad brushes?

Thanks,

Jeff

Yep, the starter is under that cover directly behind
the cylinders. The source of your problem may be
the starter clutch not engaging properly.

Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

Hmmm, ok. Sorry for the noob questions. I'm trying to learn everything about this bike. So the clutch is also in there? what's the setup of this?

Thanks for the help!

Nope clutch is inside the engine and is an engine out, crankcase strip to fix
