A reminder to double check your work...
« on: April 15, 2009, 05:40:51 AM »
So my 78 has been without a kickstand since I got it. the old mount had broken and a new hole and chunk of steel had been bolted on.  seems ok, but there was nothing to prevent it from folding up forward, so it was useless.  got a new mount and kickstand, but it is from an f, not a k, so it was originally mounted at the curve of the frame not the flat section.  seems like no big deal to just mount it at the curve, no need to drag out the grinder and make the mount flat.... well not it has a kickstand and can be moved by one person and no need to block it up!!!! but it won't clear the exhaust when I go to put it up lol!!  now I need the grinder anyway, guess I should have grabbed it in the first place!  o-well. at least it went from being a hard starting backfiring beast to a nice smooth running bike. I adjusted the valves, cleaned and adjusted the points, adjusted the cam chain tensioner, and sync'd the carbs. man it runs a LOT better, smoother, and QUIETER!  3 steps forward, one step back :)  moral of the story? measure 4 times, weld once ;)

You got that right brother.  Tack weld and then mock-up before finish welding.  I learned that lesson pretty quick working on some seat hinges lol.

we did a tack weld and made sure it looked like it would work well at the angle we had it, but I had the pipe on that side off so we could get to it to weld so I never gave it a thought!  like you said though, a lesson learned QUICKLY!

If you weld right to the frame without the spacer piece between, it will probably TEAR out of the frame. .. be careful..

good tip. I planned on welding it right to where the old one was now, there is the big plate mounted to the frame from the original. thanks!
