Topic: Help quick please! Clutch pack removal (dohc related)

Hey guys, I need some help. Need to get this done tonight. This is for a '79 CM400T. I'm trying to change the gearshift shaft, but it looks like I need to take the clutch pack out to be able to slide it out. I'm not sure how to take it out though, it looks like maybe there's some sort of locknut(?). Do I need a special tool to remove this, or can I use something else to take it off? Is it reverse threaded? Am I going about this all wrong?

Nevermind, got it.

Stuck a pair of locking pliers in the grooves, and stuck a breaker bar between the pliers and twisted it out.

Well, I buttoned everything up, but it looks like the kickstarter is in wrong. It won't retract on its own. I guess there's supposed to be a spring that's hooked into something in there.

good idea with the vise grips.  I used a flatblade screwdriver and a hammer.  There is a tool, but I dont have the part number.  did you bend one of those tabs up on that funny looking washer behind the lock nut?  it keeps the nut from coming loose.

No..I didn't see anything funny looking about the washer. It just said 'outside' on one side.

You can see the washer behind the locknut, it doesn't have any teeth on it. I think it's just friction holding it from coming loose? On the parts diagram, it is marked as a lock washer though.

I have no idea what's going on. Took the cover off, and the kickstarter would go up on its own again. Torqued down the cover, and it would stop. What the hell?

Did you tighten down the 4 screws on the spring cover sequentially?

More than likely not. I don't have a manual for this bike. What's the proper order?


Edit: I downloaded a manual for the bike, and it doesn't mention any order for torquing down the clutch bolts.
