750 Almost starts
« on: April 17, 2009, 12:55:05 PM »
This is the K0 I bought a few weeks back. K4 engine, it sat for 8 years before I got it. It sputters and tries to run but as soon as I let off the button it stops. I have it on a remote fuel tank so I can work on it easier. Fresh oil and filter, Carbs have fresh gas, the original 4 cable carbs did not work so I switched to a known good set of K3's. New battery, plugs, cleaned and gapped points, checked static timing, it has spark, all wires will fire my timing light. The valves all have proper lash. I direct wired around the kill switch. I have a new ignition switch on another bike I could try. Any ideas?

Choke working properly?  Do you have the air box, with filter installed?

Mine was doing something similar a couple of months ago, mine would stop cranking as soon as I left off the button. I used a small amount of starter fluid in each carb and kicked it, fired up but as soon as it was done burning the fluid off it would stall.
I pulled the bowls off and they all looked fine, but when I pulled the jets out they had poop in 'em. Cleaned em out, threw it back together, started and ran.
So, try some starter fluid, if it fires, you prolly have a fuel starvation problem.
Could check your plugs too, perhaps ones gapped inproperly?
Just shooting suggestions here.
Good luck!! ;D

Choke OK, no airboxes, re-gapped plugs. Starting fluid did the same thing. Maybe I should put the carbs back on the K3 and see if it still starts.
