As I understand it, she was aware of her voice potential, but gave up pursuing a career to care for her sick mother. Personally, I hope it turns out to be another J.K. Rawlings situation. Best to her in the future.

Being a cynical old prick I wonder what they'll try and turn her into, I hope that she keeps part of herself and benefits from her great voice.

Sweet 16 and never been kissed, or was that 47, or something?  Yes, a bit contrived but WTF, I think she deserves a break.

All the best to Susan Boyle, I hope she makes a big splash and has thousands of guys who like the "fuller figured woman" beating a path to her door...

Amazing voice.
Probably never 'discovered' because of our new facination w only beautiful people as valid singers. To really make it she'll probably have to become politically correct, don't you think?

Sam, that was stunning. I never watch those talent shows because of the superficiality of parasites like Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan, and truth be told I was in two minds about going over to youtube to take a look. I'm glad I did.
By the first minute of the song the lump in my throat had grown to big wet tears and in the end I replayed it 3 times. Thanks again.
Now I'm going back for another session with Paul Potts.

i love it when she comes out and everyone kindof laughs and simon makes some remark... susan starts swaying her hips and gets all, "i'm older and wiser and not afraid to make a fool of myself"... then proceeds to knock them all on their asses.

w/ that right there... she appealed to many, many audiences.

make them think you're crazy, possibly kooky... then knock their socks off!

Here's some background and her first known recording in 1999, "Cry Me a River" for a charity CD.

Interview. She seems fairly well grounded. Could make a serious go of it.

I saw on the news over the weekend she may have some competition from a 12 yr old from Wales (also a great voice). Is it the cool damp climate of the British Isles that cultivate these voices?  ;D

Go for the throat. No need to kill him, just remove the competition. ;)

Susan's talent stands on its own... no worries.

it's remarkable that everyone who sees her gets it. the reality check about superficiality, the power of a beautiful voice to lift the spirit, the triumph over life's adversities to reach ones dreams, all encompassed in ms. boyle.

average 'jane' makes good. i think she just kick cynicism in the nuts.

Pssshhhaw, Sam.  I don't think any of the ladies on the Shameless Babe Thread have anything going on upstairs, either.

Of course the whole thing was a setup. Simon runs the show, he had to be aware of the lady's OK voice. The show went to great lengths to set her up to be a disaster with shots of snickering and eye-raising.
She has an OK untrained voice. Both available songs show the same lack of tonal variation, basically just a flat rendition. She'll likely releas a record with a million studio tricks to make her sound better, it'll sell fairly well on her notoriety. She'll release a second one that will sell poorly and then we'll never hear from her again, mesmerised by the next "sensation" that the  industry creates.
She sings a whole lot better than I ever will, still!

I'm not feelin' the love from ya Bodi :)

I asked a professional musician/singer what he thought of her abilities/talent because I'm limited as a judge by my "not so good" ears.  He told me she was easily well into the "professional grade".

Personally, I think Susan's "Cry Me a River" is incredible.  Someone posted (on YouTube) that Elaine Paige was soooo much better than Susan could ever be.  I found Paige "Cry Me a River" and compared it to Susan Boyle's.  Hmmm, it takes talent to recognize a genius or at least talent to recognize talent, so I guess I'm not qualified but I have to say I thought that Susan Boyle's version was better than Paige's.

I hope she does well and that it (her success) lasts.  It seems our society loves building heroes only so that they can be destroyed.
