Watched a guy crash tonight.
« on: April 14, 2009, 11:23:11 PM »
Earlier tonight just I looked over I saw a guy starting to turn and just wipe out low side in the middle of the intersection.  Had to help the guy out of the road, he seemed stunned for a bit, but managed ok.  There was a #$%* load of traffic and his bike was hard to find neutral on so we just shoved it to the sidewalk.  Afterwards the bike would just bog out when you gave the throttle a twist, so I think that might have been what took him down.  Lucky dude had just bought a helmet and jacket today.  The only places that got all skinned up were unprotected, Alaska doesn't require helmet use but I'm sure it saved this dude some pain and misery having one on. Out of twelve lanes of cars lined up to get through that intersection, I was the only person to get out and help the dude.
At luchtime a pedestrian was was hit in the same intersection, I still havn't heard how that person is doing.  Wacky day.
I farted and made my son cry.

This the saddest feature of our over-developed western civilisation. Plus the fact there's just too many of us.
I heard that in the States it's a case of "OOoo, there's a poor man/woman lying on the road next to his motocycle, I'd better not get involved in case something goes wrong and his family sues me"?
Here it's "I'm too busy right now 'cos I gotta get to the shops/work/pub/mates' house, anyway I'm sure someone's called the emergency services already, so I'll just look the otherway and carry on"

Good Samaritain laws- most of the states have them on the books here.

As long as you can show you were trying to help and not showing gross negligence, your liability as a samaritain is nearly nil.

I was reading in The Horse Backstreet Choppers (my fav mag) an article about the apathy of man. It is too true no on gives a s%&t anymore. I was forutnate enough to have seen the opposite about a month ago. I was driving and watched a van loose control, hit the center divider (concrete), go airborn, and fall in bewtween the north and south bound lanes...into the passaic river.(the filthiest river I have ever seen) I stopped my car and jumped out and into the river to try to pull this guy out and was stunned for a second when I realized that I was the only person making an attempt to save this mans life. The van had landed in the river drivers side down, in a little more than 6 feet of water. I had to call other guys to come down and swim to the van to help get the guy out. After myself and one other man smashed out the windows I did look over and notice about 3 other men start swimming over. One bravely (or with disregard) dove into the water head first form the shore. Long story short the man in the van did not make it, and it took the fire dept seven hours to cut him out. One of the most serious cases of entanglement I have heard of ot seen.I was glad to have other people come into the water to help but for the 5 or 6 of us in the water there were probably 30 people watching and taking pictures. I hate to say it but the breed of people willing to use some of their time and energy to help or save another person is dying off.

I have a self preservation instinct that almost forces me to help, it appalls me that these morons are quite willing to watch but would never help......Their day will come.

I'll admit that I paused only because traffic was about to go and I have both witnessed and experienced combativeness after a spill, especially if you smack your head.

we had an article in the paper in Sydney last week where some "p" plater crashed his car & a whole group of people came out of their houses & drank coffee & took photos with their phones while he died - disgusting!

What a pack of #$%*s, I just can't understand how people can do something like that. By the way, what is a "P" plater?

What IS a p plater?

I have helped people in crashes and have also been amazed at the number of watchers vs. helpers. Really don't think this is anything new, just more people have photograpic equipment now (cell phones).

Personally I believe bikers will help others in trouble more than often than cagers. Maybe we could have the DOT do  a study on this?

Im pretty sure a P plater is the astralian equivelent of a permit driver or someone who has been driving for under a year. I hear that in a new rider cant get a bike over 250cc in Australia too or its a new rule.
