my chain keeps going slack ?!
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:06:15 PM »
OK, what am I doing wrong?!?!

The chain on my K3 keeps going slack.
I tighten it to ~1/2' deflection like the manual says & set the tensioners.
2 rides later it has about 1.5" deflection.
Retighten, same thing again.
I had an old chain that I though was stretched beyond use so I replaced it with one of these
~600 miles later it's still doing it - same scenario.
The axle isn't slipping - I check the position markers on the drop outs.

So what's the deal?
What's about to blow up? Main drive shaft/gear? Rear axle?
WTF?

Average tensile strength of 7,850 lbs
Suitable for up to 750cc max

I dunno....My two cents is that its on the light side for the CB750.

I'm sure someone will disagree but I like my chains in the 10,000+ side of tensile strength.

All new chains have a bit of stretch during break in....but continual issues with reoccuring slack sounds dangerous.

If you didn't change the worn sprockets, the new chain will quickly stretch to fit the wear pattern of the old sprockets.

Yeah, I thought the chain might be a little wimpy but I don't flog it. Just ride it to work....

Could be new chain/old sprocket syndrome...

Now I'm questioning whether the old chain was really bad.
