cb750 Dyna Coil help

I found some Dyna coils today for $61 so I had to get them :)
Now I have 2 questions...

1. - Does it matter where the wires go on the coil as long as the correct ones go to the correct coil? (yellow & black = 1-4 blue & black = 2-3)

2. - They came with nice Taylor 8mm wires so do I need to use a resistor plug now or ???

are you still using points?, what model? i wouldnt use those 3 ohm coils with points. not for long anyways  :D

I just installed a set of those coils on Sunday.  It DOESN'T matter where the wires are hooked up.  As long as you have the yellow and a black/white to the (right?) coil and the blue and black/white to the (left?).

Dyna instructions did not say to use a different plug.  I'm not and it's running....  ;)

I will warn you DO NOT try and put the threaded end ball (do they have a name?) on the spark plugs while they are on the bike.  I dropped one, trying to put it on the number 2 plug, it fell down in by the spark plug and in a cooling fin.  Took a good 15 min. to get a light and a mirror, with the wheel turned correctly to wedge my head in there, so I could see to flick the little sob out with a screw driver.

It is a 1973 CB750.

Curious, as to why wouldn't you use those 3 ohm coils with points? Isn't the 3 ohm coils the ones they recommend for these bikes?
I did also get a Dyna ignition on eBay for $86 so I will be using that :)

The 3 ohms are what you want with the Dyna S ignition.  I just installed that as well.  Haven't timed it yet, doing that tomorrow.  I talked to a shop owner here in KC (Cyclops), about the Dyna S, he said when you time it, to FIRST make sure that the two pick-ups are exactly 180 apart from each other.  Get them adjusted correctly on the plate, THEN rotate the whole plate to the correct timing marks.  Said there is no way to do it correctly with a test light.  Need to use a timing light.
Only problem I had installing the Dyna S, was the little pin on the advancer shaft.  I guess some have it and some don't.  Mine did and the Dyna instructions said to TAP gently on the side of it to get it out.  Bunch of BS there on a 39 year old bike.  ;D  Plus I don't know how you TAP gently on the side of a cylinder pin.....  Maybe tap on the END....??
I had to grind it smooth.  It's on a recessed part of the shaft anyway, so it doesn't have to be perfectly ground.

I used a little bit of oil and tapped it on the side and it came right out. I thought the 5 Ohms were the right coils. I think if you are going to be riding in high RPMs the 3 Ohm coils are better but local driving and traffic is better with 5.

Well crapola.... didn't know about the 5 vs 3 thing. Oh well, good thing I got the ignition cheap & I bought that too.

Sux but my plugs did not come with the additional screw on tip & now won't fit on my Taylor wires :(

the only other thing you need to get now, is the hondaman resistor pack http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=30938.0 for those coils.

Yea the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I had to dig around and find some old ones. It is a pain in the ass but you need those.

Should I just return the D8EA plugs & just get the DPR8EA??

hondaman has these already set up on a bracket made to fit the coil mounts on your 750. well worth what he asks for them. nicely made part.

If they did not come with a tip then return them. I am not sure why you would want to get DPR8EAs. They have a longer tip. I am not sure if it causes these bikes to run too hot or even fits. If you are going to use these plugs then listen for a "tinking" sound like a loose valve and check the plugs and see if there are black specks or any other signs of overheating. I would stick with D8EAs

Do you mean that he should return the D8EA's? I've never gotten them with tips. I can't remember how I got the two sets of tips that I have. Mebbe I axed at the auto parts store. While I'm typing away, Z1 Enterprises has good prices on D8EA's, and they're good folks. I think one of the owners may be a member here. 

Stick with the D8EA's. If you're feeling very creative, you can think about using D7EA's, depending on how hot your bike is running.

The spark plugs should come with the tips. You can go to a Honda shop and get plugs, that is where I got mine. Open the box in the store to make sure it is all there, if not ask the clerk "Where's the tip?" He will probably ask you the same thing when you are done haha

3 ohms coils will wear your points and condensers out prematurely, you will only want to run the 3 ohm with the S or 2000 ignition.

Wa, no tip for me. ;-) That must be how I got my first sets. I can say that the plugs from Z1 come without, but I'm sure they'll help you out if they can.

At the risk of taking this further off topic, does anyone else have a prob with the tips coming unscrewed just a bit? I doubt this causes voltage loss, but it bugs me.

The D8EA does not come with tips :( We looked through SEVERAL boxes at the dealership Saturday. I'll just have to rob Peter to pay Paul...

Damn, I don't feel so bad about "losing" the other tips. Why would they sell a plug without the tip?  >:( I will look around for some extras for ya. This little problem ate a whole lot of time and pissed me off for most of the day. I feel your pain.

I'd still email Z1. They might be able to help you out with the nips. Failing that, you could post to the parts wanted forum. Someone may have a better idea where to lay their hands on 'em.

Damn, I could not scrounge them up. Yea try parts wanted, if there is a nice soul out there they could just put it in an envelope and mail it to you. After all of the spark plug replacement going on in the entire forum someone must have extras.
