'75 750F clutch adjustment
« on: October 25, 2005, 10:19:10 AM »
Hey, since last time around i unfortunately sold one of my 750F's, my '78, but still have the '75 :),,, I adjusted the clutch the other day on the ol '75 due to slipping i noticed so i turned the adjuster screw, behind the clutch cover, 1/4 turn out like Clymer insisted but didn't notice any improvement until i turned it 1/4 turn at a time to a complete full turn out. Is this over kill and will it put a strain on the clutch? I know it'll need to be rebuilt sooner or later but no need to speed up the rebuild process until i really need to,,,,,,THANKS,,, RIDE SAFE and FASSSSSTTTT!

Well, the way I've understood to adjust the clutch is to losen it until the handle is a little lose at rest.  You should be able to pull the clutch handle a little bit (1/4 inch measured at the outside tip) without feeling any resistance from the clutch springs. Pull a little more and you'll start feeling the resistance.

This will ensure that you get full engagement of the clutch when the handle is released.

Did you slacken the clutch cable before making your adjustment? The way I understand it, any turns "out" on the adjuster screw will only affect where on the lever pull the clutch actually begins to engage. I think that turning too far "in" would cause clutch slippage, but you should be OK. This is only an opinion.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Yes i slacked off the cable and made all the adjustments by the manual. Seems to be doing better at 1/2 turn out but i can still feel a little slip. More than likely i'll be looking at a rebuild down the road. It currently has 25,100 mles and hasn't been driven rough or abused.  Thanks
