Fork boots
« on: April 17, 2009, 07:07:42 PM »
Hi all - been away for a while but back on deck now.
Can somebody describe, or post a pic or two, on how the fork boots fit on a K2 750 please. My bike has not had them on since I bought it, and now I've got some new ones and have forgotten how they fit - does the top fit into the groove around the bottom of the ears, and the bottom just fit over the top of the black tops of the outer fork legs? No clamps or anything?

I've also bought some new bling for the old girl - new wheels and spokes, headlight ears, new shocks - hang the expense.

Apart from bead blasting, what have you found to be the best way to clean up and polish the hubs - a job I must do before lacing in the new spokes.

Thanks in anticipation.
Peter.

top fits into the groove around the bottom of the ears and is held in place with a trim ring, the bottom fits over the top of the outer fork legs and sets into the groove that you'll see after you remove the black tops, which are not used with the fork boots in place, and no clamps they just set tightly enough into the grooves.

Hi peter,

Before you install the boots, look closely at them.  There should be 2 holes, very tiny, one towards the top, the other towards the bottom.

Not sure exactly why, but the side that has those 2 holes is supposed to be installed with them facing towards the rear of the bike.

I think Honda put them in to allow drainage of water, from rain or whatever (washing the bike?)....... and Honda thought it was better draining to the rear than the front (fork/tube angle/slant?).

I do know that the tubes can rust without you knowing it under those boots....... keep an eye on things. 8) 8)

Thanks Alan - would you expect the boot to stay in place without that trim ring? - I'm missing that bit. Slipping the new boots over the new ears (not on the bike) they seem to grip pretty tightly into that groove.

Thanks for that - my new boots (genuine Honda) have tiny holes on every second rib. I assume these should be facing downwards (ie instal the boot so that these holes are on the underside of the rib) and towards the rear?

I dunno, maybe they'll hold and be just fine.  If they don't you can always clamp them on with a plastic zip tie.
