carpy tail light wiring question
« on: November 02, 2008, 02:11:16 PM »
so i got the sweet round glass tail light from carpy, and i'm putting the final touches on my cafe conversion. the problem is that there are three wires in the stock harness for the tail light - ground, power, and the brake light switch wire. the carpy light only has two wires. the light works fine wired either way, but i can't figure out how to make the running and brake switch run together at the same time.

has anyone done this before, or have any suggestions on how to wire this up?

Ive seen a few lights that use the housing as ground, and one lead is running light, one is brake light. Is this that way?
If so, brake to one lead, running light to other, and make sure the light housing has good connection to the fender, usually via the mounting bolts.
No.

hmmm. so that didn't work. if i ground to the tail light housing, i can only get one light to work at a time - either the brake or running light. i haven't been able to get both to work. the brake switch is working.

any other ideas?

try wiring it off the bike ,with a lead off the battery for the ground ... if that works then there is ground jumping off the bike to the light housing, and you'll need to isolate it  somehow ..

that's what happened with my taillight, but mine had a ground wire

Just run a ground wire from the bolt on the light, to the ground on the harness and this will definatly work my friend.
