550 cam inspection cover on a 650
« on: April 18, 2009, 10:37:44 AM »
Thinking about it to further disguise a 650 motor as a 550. I was wondering if the cast of the head was the same? From the pictures I could find it LOOKS about the same but I cant tell as I wont have the 650 motor in front of me for a few more days. Anyone ever messed around with something like that?

As I recall there would need to be some welding on the head to work, but do-able.

I have read about that, I was talking about the two little round-ish covers on the top sides of the 550 motor. Whats the proper name for them?

Edit: number 13 under the "cylinder-head" diagram.

Where is paulages when you need him?

Sorry, I have no idea.
Lots of 650 experience, pretty much squat on 550 experience...
Unless you need a set of 600cc ninja pistons modified for a 550 overbore.

Does this help?

covers
for those of you wanting to dress a 650 to look like a 550:
---both ignition covers are interchangeable, but the 650 is much thicker
---clutch covers interchange, with the appropriate pushrod assembly used
---sump pans interchange; 650 is deeper
---alternator covers do NOT interchange
---rocker covers do NOT interchange without modification

you can make those little covers you are talking about fit after a little modification... the 550 has two little posts with o-rings that seal the holes where the rocker arm shafts mount. the 650 has allen head screw inserts to do this. you will also have to remove a little material on the back side of the cover (this will become self-evident as soon as you try it).

there is a copper crush washer under the cam cover bolt that holds this cover on. this is where the challenge is.... if you don't seat this properly it won't seal and will weep oil. i tried it, but never ended up getting around to making spacers that would fix this problem.

short answer: yes, it will work. if you're smart you'll figure out how to make it happen.

oh yeah, and hondamagic: i think you got the author wrong there....  ;)

I just had a chance to mock up all the parts, I might just shave off the two prongs that go into the motor all together and just use the single screw to mount it. I would rather avoid any problems with oil leaks as the covers sole purpose is cosmetic.

Thanks for the info paulages.
