Hey Sean,I'm running 138's and thats where mine seems to be OK.Now at 2000 ft....Ithink I would go with 120-125's. That is if you are going to run pods. So where are your needles set or are these the newer 750's with no needle adjustments?Mine are at #4 from the top so they are the next step up from as lean as you can go.
MrBreeze, Glad to hear ya haven't melted in the Central Valley heat
I haven't yet got a bike to run well at WOT with mains over 125-130. From the sound you made tearing out of the parking lot last month I'd guess you're running a pretty open exhaust in addition to pods?
I've been all over the map with different carbs and setups these past few years. '73,'76,'78 model carbs, stock filter,K&N Filter, pods. K8 engine, F3 engine, 836 engine/hot cam/ported head, 73 topend/78 bottom end engine. Currently working with the 73 and 76 carbs on the 836. These carbs look almost identical, but the '76 set has clip in the middle(runs a bit rich) while the '73 set has clips 2nd from the bottom( 1 position richer) and run a little lean. I am thoroughly convinced that there is no quick answer that can be given for anything other than bone stock in perfect running condition. A good starting point is all I could hope for with mods.
That said, I actually started my SOHC career on a bone stock F3 with a K8 engine in perfect running condition. Later on I got a bone stock F3 with original engine and pod filters. The F3 with K8 engine ran great with 105 mains even after I put a K&N in the airbox. The other F3 with original(black) motor and pods ran great but didn't pull as well at WOT, this bike was jetted with 120 mains. I pulled the plugs and since they looked a bit light I jetted up to 125 and WOT got worse. Around this time SamCR750 turned me on to the "asphalt dyno" or plug chop and how to do it correctly. I found that the 125's were too rich and I was gargling gas at WOT. The bike got pulled from service before I could actually test some 115's. Anyway, that is the long story of how I came to giving Hocker my opinion, which as I stated earlier is just a guess at a good starting point. And yes, If his bike is stock there are no clips to adjust needle height.
