Hey all, 76' 550k in south florida

Greetings everyone,

First off, thanks for the great forums and FAQ's here, lots of good info.

I have been riding for about 7 years now, off and on. Started in junior high with mopeds, and have played with two stroke enduro and dirt bikes since, until a stint with the Coast Guard instituted a 3 year hiatus. After a year of being a civilian again, riding around on a well used Ninja 250 and having a nice bit of savings, I figured it might be a good time to buy a new, reliable bike to do some "adventure touring" with, like a KLR or a Wee-strom. That is, until I found this beauty on ebay about 2 weeks ago, who was conveniently located in the same town as me. Not really new, and not quite as reliable, but much more fun!

I believe it's a late 76' early 77', (titled as a 76') although maybe some of you guys can set me straight with the frame number. Under 10k miles on the odo. It's pretty much all original, as far as I can tell, with the exception of Dyna fire e-pickup, coils, and brain box, and those gross 2 into 2's (they sound very nice though, quiet) The bike in fantastic mechanical shape for being unrestored, it goes straight as an arrow, and handles wonderfully, and although the jetting is way rich, pulls right up to redline cleanly, and idles and cruses flawlessly. She was ridden regularly by the PO, and was completely roadworthy, and after adjusting valves, new plugs, new Rotella 10w-40, new brake fluid, and a full cable and bearing lube session, was ready to go. Went on a 50 mile ride today, and I honestly have no complaints, except for a slightly chattery clutch, and a rather high level of snatch in the driveline somewhere. (Pulling the pan tomorrow to check the primary chain, and see if the clutch steels are warped into pretzels.) Coming off of two-strokes, WOW what a motor! Can't wait to set the carbs up right and blend the ports, these things are little screamers.

Lets see if the pics come through.

It's a little screamer alright. Right now I plan on pretty much keeping it fairly stock appearance wise with some handling and engine work to bump up the fun and reliability. I've already ordered up a good deal on a Mac 4-1, and I plan on buffing and clearcoating all the aluminum, and getting the rims rebuilt and re-chromed. Maybe a little lower "superbike" bar, and some suspension work, as well as some tapered bearings and hard bushings. As far as the engine, it pretty much needs a new clutch, and the cam chain tensioner is sticky. Chain is still quiet, but its just a matter of time, methinks. Carbs will be blasted and cleaned, and jetted properly, and ports blended and cleaned up a bit. If the top end has to come off, then maybe a cam and overbore, and some serious porting. Nothing major, just a nice looking, fun, reliable, low key commuter/weekend bike.
