Green slime in tires
« on: May 11, 2009, 07:46:51 AM »
Ive read the reviews about how corrosive fix a flat can be and that it is only a temporary fix, but I am wondering about green slime. Ive heard of many dirt bike guys using it as a preventative. If you leave about 8 ounces in your tires at all times supposedly any punctures you may get will be filled. What do you all think?

Fit it but dont expect any shop to change the tyre later!!

I Work for a shop that changes tires, and we'll change a tire that has slime in it.  But, we charge a $25 to $50 Clean up fee.

As far as the product goes, it does not work very well for tubed tires.

I used it once on a car.  It did work on a slow leak (turned out to be a leaky schrader valve that I could have just tightened for the cost of a schrader valve tool -- maybe $2), but it created an imbalance that resulted in a very annoying vibration at highway speeds.  VERY ANNOYING, and not immediately apparent what the cause was, as I was just putting around town for a few weeks before I took a road trip and uncovered it.

The shop tried to balance my wheel first, but they could not get it balanced, so they pulled the tire to check.  They scolded me for using the slime.

I'll never use it again.

Slime seems to work for me. They make slime for tubes and slime for tubless tires.
It says on the tubeless bottle not to use it in tubes.  There is a formula on the bottle that tells you how much to put in. Its easy to over slime a tire. I run slime in the rear tire on my scooters only because they do not recommend that you put it in the front tire.  There is also speed ratings so my Honda c70 has no issues
because it runs way below the speed warning on the bottle. I did notice the ride on my c70 Passport has improved. It's easy to over slime a tire if you add to much.

I tired of constantly fixing flats on the small fleet of bicycle tires that get used here at my house and started using the Slime for tubes.  I haven't since had to fix a minor flat on anything that got Slimed.  Slow operating speed yes, but some relatively high pressures in some of these tires.  It also worked with a 9.00-20 tubed tire on my truck.

The aforementioned issues with mess/corrosion doesn't happen with a tube type tire.

I haven't tried it on a streetbike as I haven't had the need arise.

Well........

bicycles, scooters, and trucks are alot different then motorcycles.....

I don't wanna do 80 down the highway with slime in my tire...in an attempt to fix something that should be fixed properly.

Theres the right way to fix a tire and an easy way.

I feel a whole lot safer with something fixed properly.

i've never used it on motorcycles and my only concern would be setting the wheel off balance.
i've had wheels off balance before... no fun, bouncy, but no fun.

I can understand not wanting to use Slime as corrective maintenance (fixing a flat tire), but does anyone have Slime in their tire as a preventative measure?

thats what i've always thought of it as... preventative maintenance.
unless you have compressed air, slime is useless for fixing a flat... that's what fix-a-flat is for.

Yea, it worked wonders on my BMX bike. I also used tire liners with the slime. Do they make this for motorcycles too?
