Good price for an engine?
« on: April 20, 2009, 02:52:41 PM »
Thinking about buying an engine that was taken from a running cb500/4 in 1985. Hasn't run since. Carbs included. Is $100-$125 a good price?  How can I see if it is seized when I go look at it? It has no kickstart lever, so how do I see if it'll turn over? What's the technique?  Thanks

That's a good price for a runner or scrap, IMO. Both about the same. Take a lever with you.

That's a simple solution, thanks. What is that bike in your avatar?

I could easily tell you more than you probably want to know, I loved that bike. It was a K1 bought in April 71, with my grass cutting money, I was 18. My parents were so proud.

So when I "ran away" from home in Nov 71, I ended up in Ft Lauderdale at a Honda shop where a bunch of crazies led by Dick Suarez from Yoshimura convinced me to Cafe my bike, which I did willingly with their help. Ported head, K0 cam, 836 kit, that wigly ass pipe, Tracey 2 piece body, dual CIBIE airport 100w lights, etc. Lots of chrome, Borranis, dual discs. Finished it in March 72, By May 72 it was stolen.   Stupid kid, no insurance.  :(

Breaks my heart, that was a really nice looking bike. Hope the f?ckers that stole it wrapped it around a pole.  It'd serve 'em right.

I think it'd be way cooler if it showed up somewhere for sale.... and you were able to get it back.  A guy can dream anyway...

Thanks flyr.   :'(

Thanks Alan. I was back in Indy by then. The bike shops knew of a ring that was specializing in CB750s. Most likely they cut up the frame and threw it in the White River, sold the motor for $250 and went on to the next one.

Pop the point cover, gently try turning it over with the factory wrench from tool kit..

Take a bike battery with you and jump the starter.

Rather not, could be a mess if a nut or rock fell in the ports..
