Anyone have a "special nut"
« on: October 24, 2005, 05:37:46 PM »
;D All kidding aside, I do need the “special nut” for my 400/4 project. Snapped off a bolt while putting on the valve cover.

Don’t ask how, I was excited and the bolt was frail. Anyway, it’s the “nut” pictured below. Sits under the valve cover, 8mm bottom and 6mm on top. Anyone with an “extra” one lying around?? I’ll pay good money. This may be the same for the 350/4 also. Service Honda tells me they are discontinued and I’ve had no luck elsewhere. Send me an email - leeschoenhof@comcast.net

Did someone say they wanted to see the motor? OK here it is. (I can’t wait to get this thing on the road!) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

Lee

Terry had a special nut...but he gave it back to Raul. ;D Sorry, I can't help you...I need my nuts. Seriously though, good luck in your search for a "special nut".

I knew I was going to get into trouble with this. Seriously, I snapped off a bolt in the "special nut". Thats what it's called in the parts fich anyway. There's no way I'm going to get the broken part out and I can't go any farther without it.

I'm hoping someone has an extra "special nut" lying around. OK maybe I should rephrase that.... Anyone know where I might find one of these?

Have you asked a machinist to make you one?

Do I understand correctly? You broke a stud/bolt off in that nut?
Have you tried an easy out to remove the broken bit from that nut?

Yep, broke the bolt that goes in the top of the nut (6mm) clean off. I didn't really force it, just snapped.  I don't see an 'easy out' doing the job, but if I have to I will go that route. I thought I'd try here first. Replacing it would be the best option. Since it's a discontinued item, I've started the search , hoping there's one lying around in someone's garage. If not, I'll check with my local machine shop.

Hey Sam,
Thanks, yes, I checked their site but don't see any nuts, special or not. Although I didn't email them with the specific part number. I'll try that tomorrow. I've accumulated an extensive list of parts vendors (thanks to everyone here) over the last couple of years. I've worked my way through half the list today, I'll do the rest tomorrow.

Yeah that's right, we had a lot of laughs with that "nut" subject...

Regarding your concern, if the nut still have bolt inside I would use a small dremel took, drill a lot of tiny holes till you can break the remains, or at least machine a slot so you can use a flat screwdriver. If you need a new nut, how about welding two regular nuts together, shaving off the excess?

Oooops, I forgot. Have you checked www.cmsnl.com? You can do a search by part number.

Lee, www.cmsnl.com lists that nut (part no. 90237-333-000) at 4 euros (about $5 I think). They don't say how many they have in stock but if they can't help, anyone with a lathe could make one in a few minutes.

Thanks guys! ;D ;D ;D
Raul, your the man, CMS was at the top of my list for this morning. I went ahead and ordered them. Hopefully they're still available. If not I'll do the machine shop route. I'm just waiting for the dreaded email "we're sorry the item you orded is no longer available".

Thanks man. I've got to tell you, I'm not a young guy, there's very little that gets me excited anymore, but I can't wait to get this thing fired up. I feel  like a kid waiting for christmas morning!

If you can't get one mate, gimme the dimensions and I'll make one for you. Oh, and it'll be in a lot better condition than the one I sent back to Raul, it looked "unused" when I got it from him, but I sure wore it out quicktime, just a pity that I did it mostly on my own, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D (with stretchmarks on my scrotum.............)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

They have my nuts!!!!

Well CMS must have my nuts, because I received their invoice today. Nothing about "sorry the item you ordered is no longer available". Hopefully they're being shipped as we speak. I always order an extra, hence the pair......of nuts.

It sounds like there available through some other sources as well. Thanks Einyodeler. Excellent. I really was beginning to think they may not be available and I was in trouble. Once again, saved by the forum.

Terry; thanks for the offer. Only a real man would offer to make a nut for his fellow biker.
