When I pull these off , what will happen ???
« on: October 26, 2005, 01:26:56 PM »
Hello ,

I am in the painting mood , and was looking at the bike to see what I could pull off and paint.
I have attached some pics of the pieces I want to rip off and paint , but i am not sure what is
behind those covers I want to remove.

I was always taught to ask first , then remove , so thats what I am doing  ;D
Is their just gonna be oil behind those covers , or are springs and small parts
going to fly everywhere like old Harley's ??

As usuall , all help is appreciated.....

Well in picture 1 it is the clutch cover. Remove whenever the mood strikes.
Picture 2, the cover on the front is your stator cover. You might get a small dribble of oil but ok to remove just becareful of wires. The back part I forget, I think some oil will come out but I can think of it right now.

Teal, You'll lose a little oil when you pull the tranny cover (next to the stator cover), but not much.  I had mine off last week, and wiped it up with a paper towell, so it's not bad.

On photo #2.. when you remove the rear (transmission) cover, you will be able to disconnect the 3 yellow, 1 white, and 1 green wire that go to the alternator- which lives under the frontward cover. If you remove the alternator cover first, the wires will keep it from being removed more than a few inches from the motor! When putting it back together, the 3 yellow wires can go back together in any order, but the white wire has to go to white and the green has to go to green.

1- good idea to pull the clutch cover occassionally to check the clutch adjustment.

2- pull the tranny cover occassionally and give it a clean around the sprocket. You wouldn't believe the amount of crap that gathers there and it all goes onto your nice clean chain.

after ya pull the stator cover, you might have to replace the gasket. good place to start an oil leak.

The wires for connecting the alternator to the wiring are behind the transmission cover in photo 2 and you should remove the transmission cover before the staor/alternator cover.
Be careful reconnecting these wires as posted above. Ensure the connectors are pushed in properly otherwise it will mean doing it again. I once made this mistake and only just got home on the battery!!!!
It would be wise to have a alternator/stator cover gasket and a transmission cover gasket before you do this.
You probably will get a small amount (<100cc) of oil from these covers. A drip tray is good in case the non return valve leaks and you have a wet sump. This can be reduced a bit by leaning the bike over to the right, before starting this work
The covers in photo 1 are for routine maintenance adjustment on the clutch and points. You need to check them regularly and adjust if necessary
