How much for a paint job?
« on: October 21, 2005, 02:26:18 PM »
Hello. I have the quote for the paint job on my CB350 resto. This is what I got:

Frame sandblasted: about 100 euro -outsorced-

Frame paint (primer+paint, includes footpegs, centerstand, tailligt, battery box etc) = 120 euro

Gas tank: paint strip, ding removing, primer, paint, decal paint and internal treatment: 150 euro

Rest: unquoted. The above jobs + the rest (headlight ears, sidecovers etc) between 600 - 700 euro for the whole bike.

What do you think about it? Seems to be a fair price IMO. Check his past works at www.artenruta.com

By the way, they quoted repairing my GZ250 gastank (de-rusting, cleaning and lining) in 40 euro. For that price I'm not going to take the annoyance to do it myself.

I lucked out with mine as my neighbour owns a mobile paint service and was looking at branching out into motorcycles and needed a guinea pig. I figured that since mine was a rat anyways i.e. rattle can black (Tremclad rust paint for those who'd recognize the name!) and a set of aftermarket side panels...$60 for the lot. Probably barely covered the cost of primer, 3 coats of Dodge Dakota green and the 3 coats of clear not to mention that he did all of the prep including stripping the old paint and filling a couple of dings in the tank. He also took the time to repaint the tank decals (metal screw mounted ones) with gold and silver.

Best $60 I ever spent!! ALthough I gave him a $36 tip in the form of a case of Molson Export...come to think of it I even "helped" him drink it...

Now I have to get her running as good as the paint looks  ;)

Hey Raul,
that pricing sounds good to me.

A local shop in New Hampshire, quoted me $1,200us for the tank/sidecovers in Goldflake Orange, IF there are no strips. With stripes he would add $125.us. After those price quotes, I said forget about the 74 cb750 frame.

The last time I had a tank/sidecovers painted (4 years ago) my 1972 S2 Kawasaki costs me $575.us
and when the tank was in the sun the stripes on the side developed millions of bubbles.
The painter refused to redo it, besides it took him 13 weeks to finish!
The courts in this area are not worth pursuing.

A warning: never go to a "biker" paintshop in Hinsdale, NH, unless you like bubbles and have a whole summer to wait for your bike.

I've paid $450 CDN to have the frame and other black frame parts bead blasted and pase coat clear coat. There's 19 parts in all.
Tank and sidecases run me $300 CDN, but I supply the stripes and safety deacls. The basecoat needs one coat of clear put on and it has to cure for a week before he puts the stripes on. They have to sit two days and then he hits it with 1200 grit and lays on the final coats of clear.

According to your past experiences, my quote seems to be a good price. They guy looked also nice to deal with and knowledgeable, and they do lot of restorations (mostly bikes of the 50's and 60's), so I think I'm gonna get a chance. Anyway, when the bike is finished I will post pictures with the "before" and "after" so that will be the time for judging...

Thanks again

My local powdercoater charges me about $100.00 US to blast and coat my frames. (frame, swingarm, triple trees and battery tray) I've got my own compressor and guns, so paint my own tanks and sidecovers etc, so the paint cost is normally about $200.00 for all materials, plus decals.

I think that any more than around $200.00 to powdercoat a frame is a rip as there's bugger-all waste (all unused powder is recycled) but I can understand the high prices for painting, as the material is expensive (particularly candy and 2K finishes) and it's very time consuming.

I'm doing a couple of mine at the moment, good thing is it's just as easy to do several at the same time as one every few months. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I found out that a guy at work restores antique cars for a hobby. My side covers are acceptable, so he's going to paint the tank (sand, prep, prime, paint and clearcoat) for $70. It will be shiny black. I will be posting pictures on the gallery as soon as I get the tank back -- which should be any day now as he is retiring from work after 30 years. Can't wait. My bike is the 78 550 already on the gallery.

No blast, no help, you make it perfect first with no primer and my local shop quotes me $400 U.S. on 3 F'in pieces. And this is for non-O.E. color with no metal flake. Tank and two side covers.
