Sandblasting my CB650 Custom questions.
« on: May 15, 2009, 01:16:03 PM »
I don't have a blasting cabinet (some day I hope), but I am getting ready to strip the bike down and do a paint job on it. I have black beauty for anything not aluminum, and crushed walnut for anything that is aluminum. Does anyone have any good suggestions that will let me keep this from becoming and enourmous mess, and reclaim a majority of the media? I read a post that someone just put a huge tarp on the ground and blasted on that, how big a tarp, and do I want to have some sides to it? Do I need to screen the media before I reuse it?

Thanks,

Brandon
Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

Use soda, it's cheap and the garden hose can make fast work of the mess in you drive way.

Thought about using soda, but it won't remove paint, or so I've read  :)

I don't know, I've only seen it used on engine parts and carbs.

Soda takes longer that other abrasives....

Doesn't take off as much metal....but your doing a frame...so thats not an issue.

Your probably just fine using what you have.

Short of doing the blasting in an enclosed area....your going to lose media....

Smaller the tarp the more you will lose.

The direction and angle of your blasting will also affect how far the media scatters.

I don't have a blasting cabinet big enough for a frame yet either, so I've been thinking about how to build one (cheaply)...

A large cardboard box - the ones fridges come in
An old metal two door cabinet like the one I powder coat in
An old fridge or freezer

I keep an eye on craigslist for anything cheap and large enough to hold the frame.  Lining it with a tarp will help keep the scatter to a minimum, then just reclaim the media you can.

Some day I'll build a cabinet out of plywood, when the $ permits.

Let us know what you come up with and how it turns out.

I'm thinking I'll just take some spare 4x8 sheets of particle board I have and make sides and a back, just tack them together. The just use either a tarp or visqeen for the bottom and top. Someday I'll make a dedicated cabinet just for sandblasting, but for now no room. Thems the hazards of using your moms garage  ::)

I'll post a pic of what I do and the pros or cons of it.

Thanks,

Brandon

Exactly what I was thinking of doing. Great minds... ;D  I have some spare boards hanging around and I think I'll make a four-sided box, then hang some cheap 3 mil plastic around the top and other side to reclaim media.

Well if you had the particle board what are you waiting for  ;D.

I'm running out of space too, but I just had a thought - if you use the particle board you could connect them with hinges.  Then you could literally fold it up when you are done and store it pretty easily.

Just waiting to get some primer and a paint gun to do it all in one go. And time. I have a graduation this weekend and my next weekend off I begrudgingly gave away.  >:(
