Need help with 650 carbs!!!!
« on: June 18, 2009, 06:27:34 PM »
I have a 79 CB650 that I M trying to grt back on road. I broke the plastic choke tab while I was removing them. I took them to  a local guy to rebuild them. He has them for 4 weeks and has not done anything to them. Picked up a set of 81's the rubber T's are dry rotted where can I find replacements. Also going to rebuild 81's any advice. Also would be interested i buying a set of carbs ready to  install.

woah slow down there partner...  Glad to have you aboard!

First off photos would help.  Please explain exactally what broke.  If its the choke knob or cable then it can be replaced easily.  Below is a diagram name the part that broke.

The plastic lever that choke cable hooks to. I looked at the photo and dose not show choke linkage. On pg 14 of the the fuel section of the 79 shop manual you can see the piece I M talking about second pic he has his thumb on it. Do not know what correct name is.

They seem to break frequently although I havent had one break.
Kit did but I cant remember her fix.   The choke part off the 81 carbs is steel but dont know if it will interchange.

Mine's a 79 and it's steel too so there seems to be some variation.
I wonder if the 81 choke plate would interchange to the 79's?
You can still ride your bike without the choke, it will just hate you a bit longer as it warms up. :D
Sounds like you need some hands on help, remaking carbs is a big call Krazyk.
There are so many different little springs and such that if you stuff it up you'll do good job.
Re sell the 81 carbs and buy the bit you really need for your 79, I got a full rack of carbs for $50 and here in New Zealand parts are very very expensive.

I M sure I M not the first one this has happened to. What are my options for carb 79-80 will any of the 750's work. Have a friend who messes with SOHC 750's. I  was wondering whether the one off 81's would work. There must B a Carb Master out there that would have the answer just have to find them. So this question has now turned into a quest to find the all mighty OZ of carbs.

If the 81 carbs fit, you should definitely go with those as they are CV and much easier to work on. Post a pic of the the part that broke first though, there is a lot of creative folks on this board. Might be an easy fix.

My 1980 650 is steel too   ???

If I'm not mistaken The CV carbs fit on the CV head.  Its best to stick with the stock setup me thinks...
Maybe replace with a steel piece.

I am very interested in why some are steel in the 79/80 carbs.  I have 3 sets of them and they are all plastic.  Soos put 750 carbs on his off a 74 I think.  Havent heard from him though. He was supposed to come by last week.

The ones between the carbs? Those are vents, and I haven't had any on my bike since I got it in '00.  No problem.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

All of the CB 650 PD carbs I have seen have the plastic choke actuator thing. When the choke rods are removed fron the carbs, the plastic choke actuator thing stays on the L/S inner carb and does not remove with the rod like on the 550/750 PD carbs. I dont know if the 550/70 metal actuator thing can be used on the 650's, but I dont think it can be. (the 650 carbs are probably thicker where the plastic actuator thing mounts) although I havent tried it.

My choke round thing is def metal, I remember someone telling me that 750 carbs would fit our 650's and were easier to get parts for and to work on, could have been Soos.
As 650's were only produced for 4 years you'd wonder why they changed so many parts eh!
CV's will not fit our heads, not without massive retrofitting so I'd give that a miss. :)

Hello krazyk
you will find alot of helpfull info around here
read Soos  project thread
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=33209.0
think he had a set off a 750 on his 79 650 then went to a set off a 84? ninja that he made work
he said the would fit the cv heads better but he made them work, if that is the case
the set you got off the 81 could be made to work
think he just used the rubber intake off of the ninja but not sure, it is in his thread somewhere
allot of info in there for the 650s

Mike

P.S  Just found this in the registry of 650 owners

Will these CV carbs switch out with the Mechanical carbs on a 80 cb650..... Thanks

They will... but you gotta make 'em work to an extent.

3 things needed really.

1 the '81/82 cb650 CV carbs
2 '84 through '91(?92) carb isolators off of a kawasaki ninja.
3 the appropriate throtthe cables for the '81/'82 cb650 CV carbs.

You don't end up with picture perfect alignment.... but it works.
I have a post on fitting '84 kawa ninja(600cc) carbs on my '79cb650 bike.

The same instillation procedures apply for the CV cb650 carbs on a non CV cb650 head with those isolators.

Basically put the isolators on the head, get carbs in place, and tip the intake side down, and the motor side of the carbs up, so they rest in the isolators(not a perfect alignment)
then as rotating upwards, pull them on.
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=40287.0
A little more difficult than stocker carbs with old carb isolators though.

If that gives you an idea.....
