suspension tricks?
« on: April 23, 2009, 02:44:43 AM »
Of course like all older bikes we all experience spring sag. my bike is suffering a bit from it and was wondering if any of you have done the PVC spacer for a temporary fix. I don't think I will have the money this year to fix the problem properly and I have seen this trick used many times on plenty of bikes.

so my question is yeah or neigh on the Idea, Is it worth the time?
Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Peter,

I have read of many different guys on this forum doing exactly what you are asking about.  They have varied the PVC length from 1/2 inch to as much as 2 inches, depending on the springs they had installed and what it was they were trying to accomplish.  Seems to work fine for them.

I have never had the need to do this.  Once, I was tempted to do it, but, a neat set of springs came my way really cheap........ in good shape...... courtesy of a massive salvage yard near me. ;) ;)

You could check your oil level in the forks....... or simply drain and refill......... a really low amount of oil or old sludge crud could make the tubes stick in a compressed state (actually, if you drain the oil and there is a lot of thick crud in there, flush and clean the forks real good before you put new oil in)........ Just a thought?

I hope this helps you....

This is a very comman trick that we use to stiffen up springs,On the race bikes we cut out the proggressive rate section, and replace it with PVC ( normally Elctrical conduct). Then play with the valving.
