Newbie from NorCal *** Updated with Pics...***
« on: January 28, 2009, 11:35:21 AM »
Just learned about SHOHC bikes here in the last 4 weeks or so and am completely hooked! I am looking for a bike now and will be making a purchase here once I find the right one. I have three in consideration - would appreciate any thoughts around which way to lean:

1. 1975 CB550F Super Sport. good shape but will need a new muffler - I can't seem to locate one anywhere.
2. 1974 CB350 Four. does not have original pipes but in good shape
3. 1977 CB750K0. Good cond but with non original pipes.

Also open if anyone here in the NorCal area knows of anything for sale.

Thanks!

Chris

Welcome aboard.
I vote for the 750.
If you don't like the pipe, I know a guy that lives 10 minutes from you that has 2 spares to choose from.  ;D

Thanks for the welcome and info! I'm finding that there are WAY more parts for the 750s. May be a factor in the decision. One reason I was leaning toward a smaller bike is that I haven't ridden in 10 years and also will be just around town. I really like the size of the 550 but man finding parts for them is near impossible esp that dang muffler!   :-\

For anyone who cares   ;D...I did make a purchase in Feb and have been working on the bike. The threads here are invaluable to someone like me with no prior MC wrenching expierence - Thanks to all who have helped so far!

In case your interested I picked up a 74 550 K0 Boss Metalic Maroon. 2 or 3 PO but all original with 11K miles for $900...think thats good, definately in my range. Going for original daily rider here.

Haven't needed to do much but have done some easy things:
- Had carbs synced and valves adjusted - FNA in Sac.
- Rebuilt and painted brake caliper
- rebuilt petcock - cleaned and all new seals
- New EBC pads
- Braided steel brake lines
- Added OEM Grips
- IBC back tire
- Tank logos
- chrome trim on tank
- seat pins
- new gas cap seal
- new battery strap
- Added tank strap/bushing - did not have one
- Added air element - missing
- New air filter - OEM
- New clutch cable - after it broke while riding the other day ::)
- removed clutch switch wire
- cleaned, cleaned, cleaned
- rode rode rode!!!  ;D

Still need to:
- Add OEM Seat
- replace upper two mufflers
- oil, filter
- add back on helment holders  :P

April:

Stoked to be riding again after 20 years and LOVING my bike! If anyone in the Sacramento, CA area has any SOHC rides planed please let me know.
