What are these 4 copper rings in the gasket kit for?
« on: April 25, 2009, 10:45:05 AM »
I just recently purchased an engine gasket kit for my '71 CB500 and the kit has 4 copper rings, each about 1 1/4 inches in diameter.  Can anyone tell me what these are for?

Thanks

Exhaust to head joint

Okay.  Can you tell me how to get the old ones out and how to install the new ones?

Thanks

If you've got a dental pick or something like it just prize them out of there trying not to scratch the exhaust walls.

Installing is just slipping them in there. They're kind of concave so may not be slip and slide but they're going to get crushed anyways so just get them bottomed and then the exhaust tightened on top.

If you hear a ticking when running afterwards it may be an exhaust leak so tighten down more or replace. I haven't had that pleasure... yet  ;D

Just lever the old ones out with a small screwdriver and lay the new ones in their place. The new ones will flatten out when you draw up on the exhaust flanges. After you tighten down on them you might want to recheck the nuts again later.

Glad I got my ride in this morning - nasty storm on the radar coming this way! I hope youre working inside.

thats good to know. I thought you had to take the 2 large screws on the exhaust flange off to put them in so I just didnt fool with them. Looks like another part my bike is missing. damn previous owner! haha

You are correct...you do have to take those exhaust flanges off to get to the muffler gaskets.  You will probably need a impact wrench to get the large screws out.  Here is a picture after I had the gaskets installed and the flanges back on.

use a little blob of grease on the copper to hold them in place while you instal the pipes
