 Can any of you straight shooting Americans explain this?
   In the days after 9/11, some US news agencies reported the highjackers entered through Canada. As the subsequent 9/11 Commission reported in July 2004, all of the 9/11 terrorists arrived in the U.S. from outside North America. They flew to major U.S. airports. They entered the U.S. with documents issued to them by the U.S. government. The story was over.
  A few days ago Dem. Janet Napolitano, the U.S. homeland security secretary, again stated they came through Canada and today Repub John McCain on Fox news agreed publicly with her.
  These people must know this is a lie.  Why are they doing this?

I saw her yesterday on one of the cable news channels ( don't recall which) where she said she misspoke and was referring to the so called Millennium Bomber who did try and get into the U.S. from Canada with a trunk full of explosives intended for LAX Airport in Los Angeles.  This was straight out of her mouth not some reporter interpreting what she said.  I would also not attach too much credibility to what you hear on Fox News.  Shepard Smith has some credibility but the rest of them are real nut jobs straight from the Right Wing Echo Chamber.  They just want to keep stirring the pot, trying to ignite some controversy. Some Repubs are angry at her and want her to resign for a different matter because she hurt their feelings.   You just got caught up in some domestic politics here in the U.S.

Hey Upperlake there is a lot of misinformation that is spread about our country south of border and it has always pissed me off, it maybe because "Manifest Destiny" failed to make us the 50+ state, who knows, I know that when I lived in California people would make snide remarks about Canada, like why am I in the states etc my usual response was that I was doing missionary work amongst the savages. Also they believe their press about " We're # 1" (some of them do at least) so they don't bother to check out the reality of whats going on in the rest of the world " I mean why, we are # 1 so that it means that the rest of the world must be trying to bring us down and Canada is a convenient whipping boy, they're Communists don't you know, which is the same old tired rhetoric and bull #$%* I've heard for most of my 69 years. Enough Rant.

Funny, I remember the story about some of the hijackers driving across the border at a crossing between Maine and New Brunswick (maybe Quebec).  This is actually the first time I've been informed that that information is false.

Even if they did, if their papers were in order, who would have stopped them?  And, if they weren't, the staff at those remote border crossings are much more thorough in my experience - they have very little traffic and most of the traffic that goes through those crossing is daily repeat-traffic - trucks and lumbermen.  The worst place in the world to try to cross without being noticed.

Anyway, glad to know the rumors are false.

I think you may be seeing a change in some of that. People are becoming testy over the economy. I people truly resent being watched all the time. I took a Ferry and had to go through a security screening since the Ferry made a stop at the Statue of Liberty. Then I had to sit on the boat while two Coast Guardsman walked back and forth with M-16s the whole trip. Did I feel safer? No I did not.

I resent that I will need a passport to return from Canada. We have always had an essentially open Border. The Homeland Security office keeps stirring up the pot for more funding.

I never got this Canada vs US stuff. I know there is some friction over something on both sides of the Quebec border,
I know a lot of Canadians in my work they have never been made to feel uncomfortable. I had made many extended trips to the Toronto and found Canadians to be friendly.

What I do suspect is that the US PR machine has overblown our opulent lifestyle here in a way that made everyone else in the Americas feel diminished. I also think being next to the US is no picnic at times, I listen to the CBC all the time and have heard how if the US gets a cold, Canada gets the Flu.

Now, since we all live on the same Continent called America. In Canada am I considered a South American?

...and why do we only have two parties to choose from in the US?  Sure, there are some other parties, but only two stand a chance of winning the big elections.  Let's face it, two is not much to choose from.  It'd be nice to have more than two options....

We have unlimited numbers of political parties, and it ain't no picnic.  Although it is nice seeing the Communists and Marxists on the ballots, alongside the Rhino Party (big proponents of drug legalization).

While we claim to have a multi-party system, there are only two viable national parties that can win enough seats to lead the country, and they are the rough equivalents to the Republicans and Democrats (Conservatives and Liberal parties respectively.

American in custody after van runs Manitoba-U.S. border

RCMP stopped a vehicle and seized a number of firearms after an American driver ran the border near Goodlands, Man., Friday afternoon.

Six firearms, more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition and several containers of fuel were found in the cargo area of the van, police said.

RCMP said the vehicle, bearing Wisconsin licence plates, was travelling north on Highway 21 when the driver refused to stop for police.

The Mounties used a spike belt to stop the van, 10 kilometres north of the border in an area roughly 60 kilometres east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border.

Police said the driver was not driving erratically or speeding during the chase.

The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit was called to the scene after officers approaching the vehicle detected the odour of gas.

The driver was taken into custody and faces numerous criminal charges along with counts under the Immigration Refugee Protection Act and Customs Act.

The Canada Border Service Agency and U.S. Customs and Homeland Security are involved in the investigation.

me and the guys here at work decided the other day on a new form of government for here in the states, its long been a belief of mine that what we're doing right now just isnt working and keeps getting worse and worse.  i see political parties as the problem period, they spend so much time campaigning to get elected that when someone is finally elected to an office, all they do is immediately start working on getting themself or other party members elected.  it seems that our officials have forgotten that theyre elected to make this place better, not to be able to better help other people get nice offices.
so we decided that we as a country need to do away with elections period and set up a system of random appointment to office.  all our government is now is people elected to represent the people who have almost nothing in common with the people as a whole.  its the whole one percenter thing, we get a nice cross section of the population as long as the population is people who care nothing except for money and power.  i for one think that to be a true government of the people, we need to know what the guy down at the lumber yard thinks, or the guy working in a factory, or some college professeurs.  obviously there need to be some side criteria, you have to have at least a high school education and be say 30 years old, but make it so that it really is by the people and for the people.

The only problem with this whole scenario is I don't think it would be a good idea to have the guy at the lumberyard, who may not be able to find Brazil, Ukraine, or Malaysia on a map, running foreign policy.  How about the college liberal arts professor as Secretary of Defense?  Or the factory worker, who maybe does a good job at balancing his checkbook, writing monetary policy for a country with a multi trillion dollar economy.  Yeah, that's all we need, a bunch of "Joe the Plumbers" running the country.  And then somehow these "regular" people will not be tempted or corrupted by money or power.

I remember reading a book by Phil Wylie years ago about the citizens and the common man and how all the politicians were jumping on the common man bandwagon at the time, his premise was Common Man Common No good S.O.B. that common man was responsible for most of the ills of your country, I won't go on about the various ills, but if you are interested the book was called "The Generation of Vipers" I don't think much has changed since it was written and of course the common man syndrome has raised its head in the rest of the world so don't feel too special.

The original intent of having local elections for Local, State and Federal officials was to have farmers and the common man in office. WSomewhere along the way lawyers and money crept in.

Many of our elected officials were "regular" people when they first got elected.  The problem may be that they just stay to long.  The system is rigged for the incumbents.  Term limits may be part of the answer.  One odd thing that constantly comes up is many polls show that many people have a distrust of government in general, or a feeling that they are not doing their job.  The same poll will show that a majority of people think their own representatives are doing a good job.  It's everyone else that is the problem.
