Extended forks - oil level wows. CB500
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:59:24 PM »
So my project  72 CB500 is going along nicely. I've done the surch thing and found conflicting info on how much oil I should put back in the forks. They are 6" over. The previous owner says the same as stock, because the lowers are the stock lowers. I thing it should be measured from the top down. But how much? I put in 5.5 oz like Clymer said. so now do I measure down to the oil and add more until its 6" higher in the tube? OR just go with it! The forks seem a little soft, but I did use 5w oil. and the have a little jump to them about half way through the rebound when compressed good. Thoughs and suggestions please.

Use the same amount of oil as stock.

If your forks seem soft it's probably the springs, not the oil.  You may need to add some preload to the springs by inserting washers or some other suitable spacer at the top.

If the rebound action is not smooth, that's some other problem.  Check to make sure the uppers aren't bent, look for clogged holes on the damping rod, etc.
