I believe it's to add tension for the twist. Making longer cruises less fatiguing.

How do you adjust that? My throttle is really stiff. I assumed it was just old cables.

Thanks.  I kind of thought it might be something like that.  I don't have an owners manual and I couldn't find it in the shop manual.

750 K0's and (I think) K1's had these, it's basically an adjustable friction lock, helps keep you from having to fight the throttle spring to keep the throttle in one position.  As Johnny says it's to prevent fatigue on long rides.  Turn the screw in to increase friction, out to reduce friction.  If it's too tight then throttle snap-back will be poor when you let go.

Loosen it all the way, and see if your throttle is still stiff.  If so then your cables need attention.

See items 13, 15, and 16 below.

Iirc, that switch assy. is a 750 item, and that screw was deleted from the k5 onward, and maybe the k1 550 as well. ???

Hmmm, I have a K5 and looking at it there's no screw. Although it's on the cmsnl fiche - there's no part #7-8 listed. Hmmm.
