2009 marks both the 40th anniversary of the CB750 and the 15th anniversary of the SOHC/4 Group.  This year, at the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days July 24-26 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, we have the chance to celebrate.

The Classic Club this year is the CB750 Sand Cast Only Club.  As the name suggests, this is a group of sandcast 750 enthusiasts.  The SOHC/4 Club has been invited to participate with room under the Classic Club Tent for a table with information about our club and display space for bikes.

While the main event is the CB750 celebration, I'm hoping there is sufficient attendance from SOHC/4 members to turn this into the 2009 Gathering.

I've posted information from  Steve of the CB750 Sand Cast Club below that describes what they are looking for with regard to the CB750 display along with contact information should you desire to have your bike on display.

I'd like to poll the membership here and find out:

a) will you attend
b) do you have a bike you are willing to have put on display - what model/year
c) can you help organize this event

Now, as for the CB750 Club Tent, the tent will be 40' x 80' with electrical outlets. The display will have an overnight gaurd for security.  The goal is to have every year/model of sohc CB750 under the tent display, 1969-78. A machine for every year/model Honda manufactured is a total of 19 different machines. This includes 75-78F Super Sports, 1969-70 K0's, 77-78 K's, 76-78 A model Hondamatics and the early and late versions of the K1.  The tent display will also be open to competition bikes, cafe, chopper and customs.  Owners' whose bikes are on display are encouraged to have some type of sign by your bike.

If you want your bike(s) under the tent display, please email me at sandcast232@yahoo.com with pictures and year/model of your machine(s.) For now, machines which will be under the tent display will be on a first come basis.

With a 40' x 80' tent, it's not unrealistic to have a minimum of 30 machines on display, so if you want your bike under the tent, the sooner you let me know, the better for all. It would be great to use all the square footage of the tent !  Right now, we have eight owners with 11 bikes to display under the tent. (four sandcasts under vin of 400)

There is the possibility of us participating in a Club lap on the track Friday and a Club Parade Sunday. Let me know your thoughts. Participation in either event is at individual owner's discretion.

The tent needs to have signage - 1. Banners on tent sides, 2. Signs on the ground beside the tent. It would be fantastic if there anyone out there who has a sign making business who can contribute for free or for fee.  Let me know.

Another great part of this is that there is still reasonably good possibility Bob Hansen, age 90, from California, will attend.   Mark McGrew and Bob Jameson are planning to give presentations about the technical and historical aspects of the CB750.

There will be a panel to answer questions about CB750 machine details. What this panel will look like and who will be on the panel is not yet defined.

Glenn,

As posted in another thread, but here also.... I emailed Steve and offered my K4 to be shown under their tent and they gladly accepted. So that takes care of 1974... Hope we can get all the years there. I will be bringing my 96 VF750 Magna and my 64 C100 Cub also. Look forward to the weekend and meeting as many SOHC4 members as possible. I plan to camp out for the weekend. Once I get a campsite, I will probably post its location at the display tent on some kind of Sign-in/Locator sheet. So everyone..... going to be lots and lots of sohc4's there......Not a weekend you want to miss if at all possible.

Ok,

I finally read through the entire post from Glenn and shot off an email to Steve to find out what was needed in signage and banners. I just got this reply from Steve and I am looking for suggestions and constructive or innovated input from our members.

" Hi Ray,

Thanks so much for your reply.

Since sohc4.net and sandcastonly are sharing participation under the tent, to my way of thinking sandcastonly will be responsible for their signage and sohc4 theirs.

One of our sandcast members is exploring signage and banners for us.  I will keep you in mind if his efforts fall short.  I should know by end of April.........  I appreciate your offer very much.

As far as sohc4.net's signage goes, that signage is up to how you guys decide.  It would be fantastic if you can put together signage for sohc4.net.   I would suggest enlisting contributions from your members to offset the costs.  I would suggest about 4 signs for your club, maybe 5 signs....... ?   Remember, the tent is 40' x 80' so it's a giant of a tent and signs will be fairly out of proportion to the tent.  Suspecting a decent sign size wold be 2' x 4'...... ?  Hoping someone in sohc4 will put together a club display, for under the Classic Club tent........... ?  To put along side sandcastonly club display........... ?

sohc4.net won't need any banners, at least for the tent.  I have been told the only banners that go on tent is Classic Club, sandcastonly.

But, ground signs and club signs/displays for both clubs demonstrating shared participation is a dream come true.

Looking forward to hearing you and appreciate your active participation.  We need more of this.  Perhaps you could post on sohc4 BB what you are doing so stir up enthusiasm.

I and sandcastonly heartily and openly welcome sohc4.net.

Thank you again for your interest and support.

Steve
"

So let me know what you all think ( whether you are participating or not is ill-revellent ) as to what signage we should have for the display and what content should be included.

I was planning on going, but I heard AHRMA might not be racing this year.

There will be vintage racing at Mid-Ohio during VMD.  We should know within 48 hours if it will be AHRMA or some other organization.

If it's AHRMA I will be there racing my Production class 1970 CB 750.

If it's some other organization I don't know if I'm going to race.  I'll make that decision when I find out what they're offering for classes.  I might race, I might ride around on my ratty Sandcast.  Time will tell.

Sorry for not posting this sooner - AHRMA is definitely out for VMD.  The AMA decided to throw us under a bus.

I still plan on going.  I'm curious to see what they're going to do for racing.  They've got a little over two months and they still haven't released their class structure, rules, etc.

I'm bummed out.  I love that track.

Unbelievable. I was waiting to hear and now I'm not sure what to do...... It's a ten hour ride and I was hoping AHRMA would be putting on the show.

If you like old bikes, go.

VMD is an awesome experience.  1,200 swap meet vendors.  Bike shows, demo rides from every manufacturer, seminars, vendors, Wall of Death, stunt riding shows, good people watching.  It's a great time.

I'm really, really pissed at the AMA right now.  But I'm still going to VMD.  7-8 hours each way for me and my wife.

Besides, the CB 750 is the featured bike!  How can you miss that?

Just meeting and greeting is doorprize enouph for me!  The sandcast only club is trying to have Bob Hansen give a talk about the early development of the 750.  He is 90 years old but still going strong.  No promises but if airfare is arranged he will show.  Hondaman........if your book is ready, or even if you only have samples, this is a great place to take orders!  Last year we sold over 200 manuals from our swap space.  The single most asked for manual was the CB750. I too wish that the AHRMA and AMA could settle the dispute.  Its something about a lawyer in NY and the predecessor group to AHRMA.   Mark Medierski is the guy in charge of the AMA museum that runs this show. I am sure he will put on a good set of races.

Unfortunately Mark Mederski is no longer with the AMA:

Neither is Will Stoner.  Can't find a link for that one.

And the AMA got rid of AHRMA, WERA is now running the racing:

The whole story is freakishly complicated.  Huge egos, lawsuits, grown men behaving like little kids.  What happens next is anyone's guess.

More on this from Steve at sandcastonly:

Quote
Hi out there

The meet is definitely beginning to take shape. I met with Tigra Tsujikawa and Tracey Powell of the AMA this past Saturday.

Bob Hansen, age 90, can attend. But, he needs help with his air fare. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Bob Hansen and Bob Jameson, the Americans who were THE men who were responsible for working directly with the Japanese at the factory with the inception, development and testing of the CB750. Bob J, Bob H and Mark McGrew ALL will be under the tent to be with us and answer questions. So, I really hope we can help Bob Hansen make it to our Classic Club tent !! Please let me know who is able/willing to help as soon as possible, so Mark can reserve plane tickets for the best price.

We need at least 2-3 more volunteers to help under the tent !! Right now, Allan Landry, Andy Dixon, Marty Kitner and Chris Rushton (from England !) and myself will be representing our Sandcast/K0 club under the tent.

We have a total of 19 bikes under the tent so far. The tent will comfortably hold 25-30 bikes.

We have seven sandcast members bringing bikes. We have no K0 members yet !?? We have nine sandcasts. Three K0's. We need more bikes !! Especially late production sandcasts and any K0's.

Seven members of sohc4.net will have bikes under the tent, including a supercharged K0, a Rickman and a Read Titan, a K0, a K3 and a K5. We need more bikes !!

Mark's Powerpoint with Bob Jameson (and we hope Bob Hansen) will be in the air conditioned tower. Their presentation will be once a day, for 60 minutes. And remember, they will all be under the tent - with us !

We need a Dri-Erase board to have in the tent to post our venue and schedule of events. Does anyone have one they can bring ?

If you have any questions and/or WANT TO bring a bike, YOU ARE INVITED !

That's all for now and more to come !

My apologies for lagging a bit on this - just really busy right now - one thing I'm working on right now is keeping Axl's Satanic Mechanic site online; that and the update to this site which is almost finished.

Anyway, as for signage, anyone in the business or know anyone in the business of making banners?  If we could get a banner made of the logo, that would be great.  Maybe print up some sheets on the site; or I could throw some stuff on a CD...

Door prizes?  Maybe I'll bring some pins or patches and give them to deserving guests...

1) as i mentioned to glenn, i've made some progress on getting a banner made.

2) i'm also curious how much interest there is in some sort of group ride or convoy of folks going out there from southeastern pa. i'm in south jersey, glenn's in lancaster county. i could meet folks in or near philly, for example.

ideally, we get a group of us riding our sohc's and at least one "chase vehicle" capable of rescuing any fallen soldiers. (i realize we're talking about honda fours, you are preaching to the choir.)

i will be riding. i would like to arrive thursday evening, as from my experience, 3 whole days is just not enough!  (or whenever they'd allow things like tent setup to commence - happy to help there...)

3) we should do a group ride once we're out there, too.

I will be arriving on Friday am.  This will be my first time there with the bikes. I am camping out, but don't know where the best camping locations are, so if anyone can help me on that one it would be greatly appreciated. I have my trailer since I am bringing three bikes. Plan on pitching a 12'x12' tent. I will have the 750 K4 under the SOOC tent, want to ride the magna on the track, and use the cub as a pit bike if that is allowed. Last time I was there was about 5 years ago and came with a friend in a car. So for  me, this is like my FIRST time. You folks that have been going every year know all the good spots, places, and any input from you all would help me a lot.

After you enter the main gate turn slightly left to get to the campground. The first section is close to the track with minimal shade.  The second section has shade in the first row and at the ends of the rows. Take a hilltop just in case of rain. After you get your spot, go back to the paved drive and turn left to proceed down the boulevard. I am not sure where the club tent will be but assume it will be near the other clubs and the BSA display in the infield.  Proceed more or less straight ahead and cross over the bridge.  Then look to the right..........There are marshalls to guide you.  I have swap spaces so I arrive late Wednesday and set up on Thursday AM.  After my set up I will check out the infield and should be able to help if needed.  I plan to park my van 'rolling tent' at the VJMC booth in the infield.

Great,

As the time gets closer, I will probably give you a PM with my cell # and maybe we can make contact via phone. I have to check with Mid-Ohio on some technicalities on the camping today....I appreciate the info since I know they changed the camping this year. Will they allow me to ride the honda cub around or do they restrict that?
