Opps, I think I toasted something.
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:50:22 PM »
Well, finally rested enough to go look at Surely after the long ride and to find out why she was acting up on the way home.  She started right up no problems there, but when I gave her a quick twist, black smoke come out the exhaust for 2/3.  She has a 4 into 2, 1/4 and 2/3.  I am kind of hoping it is just an exhaust valve seal leaking, but don't want to open her up until the Goldwing is back together.
Can I cry now? :'(

black smoke is fuel.  sounds like your problem is a fuel one.   much simpler and nowhere near as expesive.

if it were oil, the smoke would have an oily smell, and be greyish blue. so I highly doubt you've got a valve seal issue.

I hope that's true.  I'm wondering if a bad cap could be causing the problem.  She has started to hate running in the rain.

cracked coil will also cause rough running in rain.

Any bad sounds?

Remember that spark plugs are a window to whats up inside the cylinder.

It can't be a coil or it wouldn't be the two inside cylinders.

I know, just hate having to pull the two inside plugs.

Once I get the wing back together and out of the carport then I will have semi dry room to work on Surely.

PS:  left the petcock "ON" over night and noticed a rainbow under her today, me thinks I have a float sticking.

Nope, coils fire 1/3 and 2/4 if I remember right.

hmm... my bike has one coil fire 1/4 and the other fire 2/3...   the firing order is 1,2,4,3 I thought.

Far as I know, unless your bike is unique or someone screwed up, one coil fires 1/4  and te other fires 2/3.
