A wrench on both sides, slip a pipe or breaking bar over wrenches for leverage, axle has to come apart in two pieces for removal. Make sure the wrench on slotted(two-face) side is a tight fit, or you may end up rounding it. These things can be a real bear if it's the first time removing in many years.

i'm not sure about the part when you say i  two parts?
the axle is a one piece, what is holding it so tight to the hub?

You have to unscrew the long nut I have in my hand in the picture below.  You will need to hold the other end with a screwdriver or long punch in the axle hole as you unscrew the long bolt.  Click on the pic to enlarge it.

i have done that, and removed the spacer in front of the bearing, but the axle is still not coming out?
I know my question sounds simple but i put a piece of wood on the disc brake side and tried tapping the axle out with a hammer towards the speedo side but nothing.
my shop manual only mentiones unscrewing the nut you pictured and pulling the axle out, but it looks like it would need some serious force which i am restraining myself from applying. I was hoping that i missed something and decided to ask here 1st.

thanks for the input so far

markac, I was talking about the nut johnie is showing, and forgot that most cb750's have the hole on one side of axle. Sorry for any confusion. The axle is supposed to tap out the other side at this point, not sure why yours is not ??? Could be that it is rusted to the internals? Continuous moderate tapping with metal hammer to shock/break the hold?

Yah, it sounds like you have it ready to come out.  Try the taping scon mentions.  You may want to screw that nut back on a bit and tap on that.  I would hate to see you mess up the threads on the axle.  Is there a chance the bearings are bad and welded the race to the axle?  What is the exact bike we are talking about here?  What year?

the hammer did the trick,
one bearing was totally gone, it looked like it exploded. really weird.

is there an easy way to remove the bearings?

If you've already removed the bearing retaining ring (large aluminum ring with two slots) then you just have to hammer out the bearings.  Stick a long screwdriver into the hole and pull sideways to move the internal spacer to one side, then pound out one bearing, then flip the wheel over and do the other one.

Moving that internal spacer can be a pain, but you need to do it to be able to get a bite on that bearing to pound it out. Here is what the spacer looks like below.

Thank you everyone for the info , it really helps.

The hammer got the job done. I had to replace the spacer as it was really corroded, it was fused to the axle.
Luckly i picked up a spare front hub and used the parts from it and also had a set of bearings i was planning to use on my new wheels which are still in the works (18" borrani, as the steel rims i find heavy and just a pain)

anyways, just wanted to thank you for the help.
Sometimes you doubt yourself, especially when your next idea is the 'hammer bashing'.

take care

Johnie,

the bike is a 1972 cb750, the orange flake one. mostly stock except for superbike handlebars,  4-1 exhaust and dyna III ignition. my daily rider and only wheels right now.

I also have a 1971 cb750 with the green flake paint job, but she's still a barn find and next year she might get some attention.
again thx for your help

Ah, nice mark...I really like the sunburst orange color.  That green K1 is nice.  I am just finishing up a gold K1.
