Well yes, and AIDS is a true, worldwide epidemic, but it doesn't have the potential of sweeping through and wiping out a large chunk of the global population in a matter of weeks the way a flu epidemic does. 

Also, in the vast majority of cases a person who contracts HIV could have easily done (or not done) something to prevent it.  I'm not in any way saying that I think anybody who is HIV positive deserves to be.  I had to watch my favorite uncle slowly waste away and die as a result of AIDS, and I wouldn't wish that on anybody.  But when it comes to a flu epidemic, risky behavior becomes as simple as inhaling in the vicinity of an infected person.

I think SARS was also different.  It was highly lethal, but not highly contagious.  They don't know how lethal this is going to be, and it has already proven itself to be highly contagious.

I guess what I'm aiming at isn't that I doubt, or don't doubt the seriousness of this illness.
It's just that the media is a little boy that cries wolf all too often. It brings about callousness if nothing else.

What happened to those Africanized bees that were invading the US?
Weren't they supposed to bring drugs and crack, crime  and low home values to American bee hives?

They've been here for a while and have been polluting the docile honey bee populations with their aggressive genes.  I think it hasn't been news for a while because it's already happened and there's nothing that can be done about it.  The real news about bees now is that they're disappearing.

As for the Swine Flu, it's definitely looking like this is not the "big one".  From what I've read about the confirmed cases so far, it doesn't seem to be any more lethal than any other strain of flu.  The news keeps repeating the scare-phrase "humans may have no natural immunity to this strain", but it hasn't been killing a disproportionate number of people who have been infected, so I'm not sure where the basis for that thought comes from.

A Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) study claims the typical yearly flu deaths in the US is about 36,000.  I guess this flu has a long way to go before we can consider it worse than the typical flu.

Ever since I got the email informing us about the swine flu being on campus, I'm not feeling too well.  Talk about mind tricks.

Of course, exactly 1 hour and 7 minutes after they sent the email about the swine flu, they sent another email about buying football tickets.   ::) 

See, at Notre Dame, everything else is secondary!
