finally had to replace the exhaust on the ol' saturn
« on: April 27, 2009, 11:49:02 AM »
446,700 miles on the original exhaust system. muffler finally fell apart yesterday afternoon. i cant believe how nice and quiet and smooth it runs now. i got in at the midas and turned the key not even realizing it was running. i fell in love with my car all over again.

That is insane. I didn't think a saturn would last that long. I had an 01 SL2, it was a POS.

Good on ya though Fuzzy.

Nevermind the car, I've never heard of an exhaust system making it that far!!! Not much salt on the roads in your parts I suppose  ;)

 446,700 miles divided by 24,901 = 18 laps of the planet  :o

funny thing is, this car is what i drove out into the woods when i was deer hunting, i've hauled many a buck out of the woods in this station wagon. NO salt on the roads here, or florida where i got it

Not all that uncommon in the warmer states, where there's no need for salt on the roads, for cars to go their entire lives on the original exhaust system.  Muffler shops don't do the kind of booming business that they do up in the North.

The SL2 I had originated in California and never left there either. It just sucked.

i dont know if it was those twin cam motors that sucked or what. i dont even have to add oil in between oil changes yet. this car has never had anything but mobil 1 in it since the first oil change after break in. i change the trans fluid/filter every 30k, the trans filter is on the front of the trans, you can get it off from up top under the hood. it looks like a regular oil filter. i've had 4 drivers seats, 2 power steering pumps and 3 radiators. trans has never been worked on, motor has never been opened up. i think i might have to go and replace the lifters sometime this year as one is starting to tick a little bit.

by the way, this was only the muffler, rest of the exhaust is still original, catalytic converter included.

i drove up to ohio last month, up through the mountains, cruise control at 80-85 most of the way. i got a best of 36mpg (on the way home) and a worst of 32 mpg. i tend to either kill a car really quickly or keep one forever. i had a mid 70's toyota hi-lux back when i was in high school, it had well over 500k on it, i gave it to one of my brothers when i moved to florida in 89, he finally had to retire it because it had become unsafe with all the rust on it. still ran good and i think that 20R motor lives on in a celica. i plan on keeping this saturn for a long long time. probably just rebuild the motor and trans when/if they ever wear out. oh, i even tow a motorcycle trailer with it.

Just throw on one of those little fans that mounts to the dashboard.  That'll be enough for a South Carolina Summer, won't it? ;) :D :D

If it's not the relay, then it may be the compressor clutch.

last summer we had something like 30 days straight with the heat index over 105, yeah a/c is pretty necessary  :D

How many times was the exhaust manifold removed and reattached?

never. nothing has ever been removed from the motor except the filter, alternator and power steering pump, but the motor it'self has never been opened.

I did consulting work at the GM tech-center when the Saturn engine was developed, High speed machining work on the engine blocks and heads.

I find your engine life difficult to believe. What a POS.

believe it or dont, other than a valve cover leak, and the aforementioned lifter noise when cold, it's been totally trouble free.

Take the connector off of the pressure switch and jumper it.If its low on 134 it should kick on. If not.....check for power (fuses). could also be locked up compressor....try to spin it over.
I don't work on many Saturns but had an 02 Vue in a few months back.It had misfire codes and low coolant temp. code. Came to find out that the intake plentum had to be removed to change the plugs and the lower intake to change the thermostat. The labor was insane to replace parts that are basic maintanence.I would never own a POS like that!!!!!
