In my experience with cb550, everything quits when you disconnect the battery at idle.  I'm pretty sure (but I cannot swear) I've disconnected the battery at higher RPM and it kept running until the revs dropped down, then it just died.  I'm unable to reproduce that experiment at the moment, but I'm sure you are capable of doing this yourself.

Also, there's no way in hell the bike will start with even a low battery, let alone no battery.  Not by kicking, not by bump-starting, nothing.  Mind you, I had already converted to electronic ignition, which I understand does not work at all when voltage is low.  When I had points, it was much easier to bump-start when battery was low.

Yes, I could see a capacitor-driven system storing energy for periods where the alternator could not produce any.  However, why not just use a battery at that point?  Battery would serve as a capacitor.

+1, these bikes will not start without a good charge on the battery. If it can't turn the starter it's going to be a challenge (like that mojo? A challenge!) to get it going even with the kick. Not only is the battery charging the field coil, it's charging the ignition coils. And powering the head light. And the markers. And the tail light. And the instrument lights. You get the picture here, I've wound up stranded with a low charge on the battery. Even reading 11.7 volts (a single volt from a full charge) it's tough getting the beast to fire.

Hmm.

Well, you ask how smart we are, and then proceed to make a totally false claim that's based on your lack of knowledge about the CB750 charging system.

If you dont think its possible or want to discourage me. DONT reply.
If you have any knowledge or experience, good ideas please reply.
The reason i know it will work is because of common sense.

You claim to know that you can run a CB750 without a battery, but you had no idea that the 750's charging system is an excited field system.  Your "rules" presume that anyone that doesn't think it will work, has no knowledge or experience.

When, in actuality, the people who have the most knowledge and experience here will tell you without a doubt that the 750's alternator cannot generate power without input voltage.  You were even linked to the only manufacturer who makes a REPLACEMENT alternator that incorporates permanent magnets, yet you insist that a capacitor based system will work.

I think this is why people are offended.

Yes it can be made to run without a battery,

Fit a very expensive, if you can find one, magneto and have no other electrical items on the bike.

As to your attitude i have only one answer

Would putting magnets in the rotor accomplish a charging system that does not require a battery?

Three phase will work without a battery. Ive got a three phase permanent magnet alternator from a honda shadow on my xs650. No battery. Works fine. A two pahse would work if i didnt want lights.
Would an electric igniton use less power?

Talk about quick response. Ill give you guys that much. just that though. Rules....ahem. ;)

You state the obvious permanent magnet alternator
When you have an 'excited coil alternator' working without a battery, then I'll be impressed
If you switch to a permanent magnet alternator it works just the way you want
BTW, how did you fit a Honda alternator to XS?
The crank tapers are different

My dog pees on me if I act in any way happy to see her when I get home.

I'm pretty sure that means I can ride a bike with no handlebars (or battery).
