wow, so many replies, in such short time.

look at homebrew wind power for your answer, there are a lot of people using car alternators to generate wind electricity, and the car alternator is the same basically as the cb750 alt, you need to bypass the voltage regulator and power the exciter coil directly from the rectifier output, thus it will begin to magnetize the rotor when it starts turning.  you also need to add a "primer" magnetic field to the rotors, the wind people were using a small magnet sunk into one of the rotor "fins", that would produce a small voltage just to get the whole thing started before it cascades.  if i were doing it, i'd find a ring magnet that would fit around the bolt that holds the rotor on, something fairly flat.  but that's how i would do it if i were trying to do it your way.  honestly, I'm working on a lightweight carbon permanent magnet rotor, which will remove the whole rotor from the engine, which weighs something close to a battery, and this should reduce the flywheel effect also...

Not quite, car alternators have the windings inside the rotating mass which is designed to have some residual magnetism so it will Self Exite if in good order, CB750 dont

I find it hilarious that anyone can suggest something that actually works. Regardless if it's "period" parts or not, and be called a useless troll for it.

On a lighter note, I am equally surprised to step away for a day or two and find that it went from 2 to 8 pages. You guys are awesome!!

Engineering isn't for everyone. Some of us should just leave it to the professionals.

I have a suggestion for the forum.

Let's make a new sub forum called the "Pillory" and put stuff like this in there because it is so much fun to read through.  Any of the wankers that have shamed themselves off of the forum with a thread like this can go in there.

What say ye?

There was a forum I wa son where the mods would make the poster globally ignored. The poster didn't know it, and none of us could read what they posted, so they just kept posting wtf ever they were posting, never getting answers or anything. Good times.
No.

While I like the idea of it, I don't think the moderators could formally sanction a pillory style section of the forums and still maintain the reasonable amount of impartiality and control that they currently have.  It's a very delicate balance for them to keep the kind of relative civility that we enjoy here without coming across as power-hungry internet "tough-guys", and they do a great job of it.  Something like a showcase for the failed attempts of suspected trolls could easily upset that balance.

But hey, I could be wrong! ;D

And speaking as a multi-post participant in this thread, I'm just surprised it's been allowed to go on for as long as it has, especially in the Tech forum. :D

Wankers??
Wot, you going all British on us now , Bung??

Anyway, I have enjoyed this thread immensely. Nothing like a good bit of name calling and other insults to get the blood-a-boiling and loins-a-stirring, sure. It's what the good ol' guys used to do when things got boring and tedious.
I've not been so awake all week!!
