Or, if you are like me, the lucky owner of a self-priming sump.. thanks to a leaky check valve.  :D

So, I take it the self-priming sump is an inovation left out on the K8?  ;D

greg,if you kick to purge.then kick to put oil back in the sump.

That might do it, I guess.  But I don't think there is any real value in purging the thing in the first place.  The amount of oil that came out when cranking it was pretty miniscule and probably just whatever was left in the oil pump.

I hear of people filling new oil filters with oil before installing them to reduce the amount of time to get the oil pressure up.  Another one of those things that sound good in theory but probably makes little practical difference.  It is fun to talk about, tho.

Hi Jim, perhaps there was some oil left in the engine as you refilled the oil?

Tony,
I think you are correct. I have checked the oil when cold, it is visible in the resevoir and it is visible when hot also, but less is visible! I have been told that if you can see bubbles in the oil, then at least you can tell that it is circulating, and I can see bubbles.
I would have thought that when hot, very little oil should be visible in the resevoir? perhaps \i need to check the resevoir when hot and the engine still running? has anyone tried this?
Jim.

Bob,

We must own the same bike.. ;D  If I don't ride mine for several days .... all the oil drains back into the sump.
The result of this is the clutch sticks....badly.  So to counter this, I have to run the bike in neutral for several
minutes till the oil ( All .. in the south   ;D) returns to the tank and the clutch releases..hopefully.  Sometimes
several "revs" is necessary to encourage it.

Pretty much my routine as well. I usually pull the clutch for a 5-10 secs. and at the same time goose the throttle a bit. Seems to free things up so the shift into first is a click rather than a clunk.

Not had that problem, yet! Does anyone, follow this procedure? Start the bike with the kill switch engaged, (so it won't start), this gives the oil a chance to circulate. I have tried it, but the oil light does not go out until I start the bike properly, then after a second the light goes out!
Jim.

You can build enough pressure cranking the engine to turn the oil light out (did this when trying to turn my engine over after 22 years of storage with fresh oil), but it takes a while and does not do your battery much good. It should not be necessary to prime the engine this way. There will be residual oil from the last running in the engine and normal start procedure will get fresh oil circulating quickly enough.

I thought that was the case, my oil light goes out almost instantly and I try and ride or start the bike everyday. I checked the oil level with the engine running whilst warm and the oil level is just over the top line on the dipstick, so I am happy with that?

Best oil level check I know of, and do it every time I come back from a ride (paranoid I guess), is shut off the engine and immediately check the oil level, with bike in the vertical position of you are a purist  ;). This way, in case you have a leaking check valve, which is not uncommon, you won't get a false low reading and be tempted to add oil.

Timely thread. I already own a '78 550 which I love. A '78 750F came up for grabs, I bought it and it arrived on the hook yesterday. It is not running and hasn't run for 3-4 years. The seller didn't know exactly ho long as he bought a new bike and sort of forgot this one.  The first exercise was to change the oil. It is a different configuration than the 550. I managed to get about 3 litres of black ugly but still viscous stuff out of the reservoir, the lower drain and the filter. The new filter came with two O rings that eventually got figured and installed. I then uncorked the Honda motor oil and started to fill the reservoir. For some reason I decided to check the oil level after 2 litres. It is full!!! I tried kicking it over but still full. From this thread, can I assume that once I get it started I can expect the oil level to drop and I can top it up? Many thanks.

Yes. That has been my experience anyway! In fact, after pouring in approx 2 litres and finding the tank full, I clean forgot about it until after running the engine for a while and happened to notice the oil light come on - had to add at least another litre then!  :D

Those of us who move from the sanity of the wet sump bikes (350/400/500/550) to the dry sump seem to always have this problem - there's a FAQ!

There's a correction to that list.... You kick the motor over after you've removed the OIL FILTER, not the pan drain plug, as this pumps the last dribble of oil out of the pump.

Hmm.

I thought I'd fixed that.  Is the FAQ still wrong then?

Sorry, but I'm afraid it is. :P

You did add the part about kicking it a few times, but to the step about draining the oil sump.

I get about 1/4 to 1/2 quart when I kick to purge. It takes me about 1 hour to change oil because I like to try and get as much out as I can.

JIM

MY ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL FOR A 76 F SAYS  " REFILL WITH APPROX. 3.5 LITERS (6.2 IMP. PT) OF RECOMMENDED GRADE OIL".  IT GOES ON TO SAY THAT YOU SHOULD RUN THE ENGINE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND RECHECK OIL LEVEL.  ADD OIL IF NECESSARY.  IT ALSO HAS A NOTE:  PLACE THE MOTORCYCLE LEVEL.
I don't want it to go like a motorcycle, I want it to go like a rocket!

Do the F models hold more oil than the earlier K's?

Don't know about the F vs. the K, but after many oil changes over that past 4 years, I have never put in more than 3 U.S. quarts ('77 750F).  After everything has been drained I add about 2 1/2 quarts to the tank, crank the starter for a little while, then start the bike.  The oil level sloooowly goes down and then I add the remaining 1/2 quart.  The tank level keeps falling and falling, and then slowly begins to rise again.  Once the oil level stabilizes it is at the full mark on the dipstick.  Simple (though scary the first time)!
